[#081] Abandoned Building Research (Pokémon XY)
Theme Prompt: #081, Haunted house
Title: Abandoned Building Research
Fandom: Pokemon XY
Rating/Warnings: General, none
Bonus: No
Word Count: 962
Summary: Augustine and Lysandre take an overnight research trip.
"... And you'll be leaving these here overnight?"
Augustine stood up, apparently satisfied with the machine he'd been tinkering with. "Yep! I think they're good to go, now."
"I see. Then, I wonder if it is time for us to depart for the night - we are some way from civilization, I have to say. I'd rather not risk us getting lost in the woods once darkness truly falls."
"Hm?" Augustine turned to face Lysandre, his expression cheerfully blank. "Where are we going?"
"You hadn't mentioned having booked a hotel, so--"
"Right, because we're staying here. No need to go anywhere!"
Taking in the meaning - and implication - of Augustine's words, Lysandre held his gaze for a few moments before sighing deeply. The building itself sat deep in a forest in Southern Kalos, old enough to invite rumor and remote enough to discourage all but the most determined of visitors. The path to it wound through overgrown gardens, but the manor itself lay in relatively good condition - as if, abandoned as it seemed, somebody was still tending to it, or--... for some other reason, the kind of which gave rise to those rumors. Augustine and Lysandre had arrived to find it as abandoned as they'd heard, and so, Augustine had set to work.
"I notice you failed to mention that aspect of your intentions to me."
"Oh, I thought it was obvious. This sort of place is just the kind of location that Pokémon end up settling - and, who knows? Maybe we'll encounter something special while we're here. Can't do that at a hotel, right?"
"And--... as for our meals...?"
"I brought supplies."
"And our sleeping arrangements?"
"I brought sleeping bags."
"Ah. You've brought me camping, I see. Augustine, I've told you before, camping has never been my ideal--"
Walking over, Augustine patted Lysandre's shoulder enthusiastically, grinning all the while. "You complain too much, my friend--! Is it camping when we have a roof? I should think the bedrooms here are still in an acceptable condition, too. We're hardly exposed to the elements here...!"
-----
Having set up the machines that would record the desired data and then having partaken of Augustine's meticulously-prepared picnic supplies, the two of them retired to bed. Augustine had been right in his estimation that the bedrooms were habitable - a little dusty for Lysandre's liking, but Augustine had brought sheets and sleeping bags for a reason. For one night, at least, Lysandre supposed himself able to put up with it.
He lay awake, staring up at the ceiling; he couldn't help but notice the tell-tale signs of damp, but otherwise, he supposed the bedrooms - and the manor itself - fairly opulent for a place known as being abandoned. Certainly, back in its day - whenever that had been - he could see it as having been quite an impressive dwelling. As it was, he couldn't help but wonder on its mysteries - if it was being kept by somebody, then who? Nobody seemed to know. Was this the behavior of some kind of Pokémon? That wasn't beyond the realms of possibility, but Lysandre wasn't sure. Augustine had an adventurous spirit, one that perhaps, at times, lay oblivious to the possibilities of danger lurking in abandoned buildings in remote forests in the middle of nowhere. Augustine had (somehow) managed to fall asleep without difficulty, but Lysandre couldn't quite set aside his concerns that easily.
A noise--
The scraping of a branch against one of the windows? Perhaps.
A creaking--
Augustine was right, Lysandre knew, that this was the kind of place that any number of wild Pokémon would take as a settlement. In the roof, in the walls, even in the other rooms around them - it made sense for them to be anywhere. After all, we're the ones who've invaded their habitat. (Nonetheless, Lysandre got up and out of the bed, wanting to take another look around the room and outer hallway, just in case.)
The hallway lay quiet and empty, but Lysandre knew that to be no firm indication of anything. He looked back towards Augustine, sleeping soundly.
There are Pokémon that use sleep as an excuse to attack. Pokémon that gain sustenance from eating the dreams of others. Just because we can't see them doesn't mean that they're not--
(Another noise, like footsteps on floorboard--)
Lysandre closed the bedroom door, reluctant to leave Augustine by himself. Perhaps those noises came from Pokémon or perhaps they didn't, but more than anything else, Lysandre wouldn't allow Augustine to come to harm; regardless of what other presence lay within the manner, Lysandre was adamant of that fact and that fact alone.
-----
"... and the forests nearby are supposedly a good place to observe the migratory habits of--... Lysandre? Are you okay?"
"Huh?" Lysandre looked up on being addressed; he'd been sat with his hand against his forehead, fingers pressing against his temples. "Oh, yes--... although I'd have to admit to having not slept well, last night. ...Hardly at all, in fact."
Augustine's expression clouded in concern. "Is that right? I'm sorry. If you want to nap while I'm taking down these readings, please do...! I'd just been thinking myself at how well-rested I felt - there's something about sleeping somewhere like this when you're so used to the city, isn't there?... Perhaps you'll sleep better tonight, now we're used to the place."
Lysandre had closed his eyes while Augustine had been speaking, but snapped them open at that statement. "We're staying here tonight... also?"
"I'm not sure I got quite the readings I wanted, I thought maybe if I adjusted some of these..." He smiled. "If you're okay with that, of course?"
(A nap sounded like an excellent idea; all the better to stay awake while you sleep tonight, I suppose.)
"... Of course. Whatever you require."
