[#002] Trial by Fire (Iron Man: Armored Adventures)
Theme Prompt: Practice Makes Perfect
Title: [#002] Trial by Fire (Iron Man: Armored Adventures)
Fandom: Iron Man: Armored Adventures
Rating/Warnings: PG; Spoilers for Season 2, especially S2:E20
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 897
Summary: Pepper discovers her Iron Man learning style.
Finally. Finally. It’s been over a year since Pepper pegged Tony as Iron Man and almost as long since she started operating the suits remotely from the armory. She’s gotten pretty good at it, too; but she’s even better at nagging. She is positively superb at nagging, as a matter of fact.
Result: she finally gets to pilot a suit for real. This could very well be the most exciting thing ever in the history of ever. The faceplate slides closed, and she’s ready to soar like Iron Man.
It’s, uh, a lot harder than it looks.
New York City is her playground. Okay, it’s more like a seriously challenging obstacle course full of too many buildings and people that should really learn to get out of her way. Cruising is pretty easy, but the twists and turns and the whole paying-attention-all-the-time-thing are kind of difficult.
“Try making a low pass around to Sixth Avenue,” Tony instructs her over the radio. “But don’t take it too fast.”
“Oh, come on, going slow is zero fun,” she complains.
“You have to learn how to stay in control no matter what speed you’re going, Pep,” he insists, a touch of annoyance in his tone.
“Fine, whatever, all aboard the Slowboat Stark.” As Pepper angles herself around the corner, there’s a pricking in her thumbs. Okay, so it’s technically a tickle in her nose and –
“Ah- achoo! ” The boot jets flare momentarily and Pepper somersaults in midair and she’s trying to right herself but she seems to have too many limbs and that is definitely a building with some really nice scrollwork right in front of her face.
Whump!
“Pepper! Are you okay?”
“Whoopsies,” she says nervously as she bounces off the façade and careens away. “I’m good, I’m totally good.”
“Are you sure you’re ready for this?”
“I just need a little more practice time, Tony,” Pepper whines.
“Uh huh.”
Tony’s misgivings about Pepper flying the armor in person aren’t unfounded; she bounces off more than a few buildings and nearly wipes out a helicopter (that Rhodey incidentally has to rescue) in the span of ten minutes, not to mention the pedestrians she nearly bowls over or the plane she narrowly avoids or thecloud billboard she smacks into before Tony orders her to return to base.
He shouldn’t be so uptight about it, Pepper thinks. Rhodey was a gangling idiot in the suit his first time out and she didn’t leave the armor lying around where Happy Hogan could hijack it. She’s doing just fine, thank you very much.
Besides, there’s only so much practice she can get operating the suits remotely. Something gets lost in translation, and you can’t exactly learn all of a new language by reading the same textbook over and over. You have to get out there and chat with the locals, so to speak. She’s earned this, and with enough time in the air Pepper knows that she’ll get just as good as Tony and Rhodey. Yeah. Time. That’s all she needs.
But when you’re a superhero, time isn’t usually on your side, and today is not going to be an exception. In the remarkably short time it takes her to get back to the armory, the world turns inside out.
Any thoughts of practice vanish when meteors begin to rain down from the sky, everything is turning red and roiling, and the Mandarin of all people teleports in to ask for help defeating Dr. Doom after collapsing on the floor in agony. On top of everything else that’s going completely mega freaky wrong, Gene has one more bomb to drop:
Howard Stark is alive.
Which means Tony and Gene are beaming to Latveria to save him (and hopefully the world while they’re at it), and Pepper is getting back in the armor. Training is now Officially Over. Doomsday has begun.
The city looks different as she accelerates towards Rhodey, and not just because it’s the color of fire or because there’s a scary-looking portal overhead and glowing, spherical interdimensional beings are pouring out of it to fry them super-crispy. Half an hour ago the city was something to dodge. Now, it’s something to protect.
Tight corners? Easy.
Sudden reverse? Done.
Rolls and spins? Please.
Dodge and weave and zig and zag? Cake walk.
Laser-like aim? Child’s play.
Teamwork disguised as evasive maneuvers? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
It wasn’t practice she needed; it was danger. Danger makes her focus. There’s nothing in the world like the threat of extremely painful and extended electrocution to motivate someone, and skills she’s struggled with for days are suddenly as natural as breathing.
It’s as though the whole world has sharpened around her and a fog has lifted, revealing the path she needs to follow with almost ridiculous simplicity. The Christmas ornaments from space-hell zip around her and Rhodey, and Pepper knows where she needs to be without hardly needing to think.
Deprived of the time to practice, Pepper skips advanced beginner, sails past intermediate, and speeds straight into expert mode. Adrenaline pumps through her veins to drive her on, but she’s steady as a rock. If they weren’t about to die, she’d be whooping with pure, wild joy.
Yeah. Danger. That’s what she needs. Forget practice: danger makes perfect. Wait until Tony sees how awesome she is now.
Assuming, you know, they survive.

I love how Pepper's voice comes through so clearly, and there are lots of lovely little turns of phrase throughout. Nicely done.
