[#026] Awakening (Everwood)
Theme Prompt: Amnesia
Title: Awakening
Fandom: Everwood
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: No
Word Count: 478
Summary: In an alternate reality, Colin Hart survived his surgery. Unfortunately, that comes with its own set of problems.
The Miracle of Everwood holds strong, said the papers. Against all odds, despite Dr. Brown's promise he lay here breathing and seeing and feeling. When it sank in that yes, everything was going to be okay and his recovery would go much more smoothly this time, he wanted to leap up and cheer.
His family came and went while he was half-conscious, his parents crying and his sister smiling for once. Dr. Brown checked up on him every half hour, and his son whose name escaped Colin at the moment stopped in at least twice. Their images were blurry, but he knew they were real.
Then two strangers walked into the room.
"Colin, Dr. Brown said you could have visitors."
A blonde boy with curly hair, a girl with a sad smile carrying a stuffed toy. Both looked like they'd been crying, too.
"Who are you?"
The girl whimpered, the boy looked like he'd been punched in the stomach, and Colin instantly knew this wasn't right. His head ached and he felt fuzzy, and if Dr. Brown hadn't come in just then he would have panicked.
"Who are they?" He gestured to the visitors again, and Dr. Brown looked slightly pained.
"I had a feeling this might happen again. Memory loss is common following major brain surgery," he sighed.
"But I remember everyone else." Dr. Brown, Ephram, his family, even the name of the nurse who'd prepared him for the surgery. He looked at the pair again, the girl had tears in her eyes and the boy looked completely devastated. "But these two..."
"Dr. Brown, isn't there anything you can do?" the girl implored. The doctor shook his head.
"Not at the moment, no. We can't force it, either. Sometimes amnesia's selective," he turned to Colin, "you could be blocking something out without realizing it."
"This is insane," the boy ground out, his voice breaking. "How could you save his life and not-"
"Bright." The girl sniffled. "H-he's alive. Maybe we should just be glad for that."
"I'm sorry," Colin murmured, his eyes growing heavy. He feels so crappy about this, guilty and confused, he's tired, he aches. Dr. Brown walks towards the door, gesturing for the pair to follow him.
"Let's let Colin get some rest for now. Maybe you can come in and see him later."
"Dr. Brown," Colin murmured, "will I ever get my memory back?"
"We'll see." The doctor smiles a little. "You just rest, and I'll be in to check your recovery progress in a few hours."
"Let's go, Amy," the boy-Bright-said, putting a hand on the girl's shoulder. His eyes met Colin's and he looked about to say something, but turned away silently as they left with the doctor.
Bright. Amy. The names struck something in him but rang no bells as Colin drifted back into sleep. When he awoke hours later, there was a stuffed toy tucked into the bed beside him.
For some reason it made him smile a little.
