[#002] Third Time's The Charm (Sailor Moon)
Theme Prompt: #002 - Practice Makes Perfect
Title: Third Time's The Charm
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Rating/Warnings: G
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 603
Summary: Taiki wants to take Setsuna out on a classy, nice date. Taiki and Setsuna do not have classy, nice friends.
The first time Taiki takes Meioh Setsuna out, he reserves box seats at a poetry reading. Arriving at her residence half an hour early, he gets the door shut in his face and his presence announced behind it as "that guy," but only once Setsuna herself can be heard asking who was at the door.
She's carrying a small purse when she appears, her hands in gloves and her hair swept off her neck, and Taiki is so speechless he ends up spouting trivia about the evening's entertainment to cover for his unforgivable lack of coherent compliments. Then he runs out of things to say in the car, and they enjoy a companionable, if stilted, silence.
"She didn't fall asleep?" asks Seiya from where he's doing stretches on the floor afterwards. "She's a keeper."
"Shut up, Neanderthal," says Yaten, throwing a newly-emptied water bottle at him. Taiki excuses himself to try and write some lyrics, but the words still won't come.
---
The second time Taiki takes Meioh Setsuna out, spring has come to Japan again. He orders a gourmet flower-viewing bento and hires one of the younger Soldiers of this Solar System (the blonde one with the bow; she accepted payment half in autographed photographs) to camp out overnight in the ideal viewing spot.
Removing her from the premises proves more difficult, so he and Setsuna end up kneeling on one corner of their blanket while she progressively occupies more and more of the other half. Taiki points out he didn't choose to vacation in this Solar System only to be harassed at every turn, but when his actual reasons are demanded of him, he falls silent. Setsuna smiles and informs him afterwards that she had a lovely time.
"That's progress," observes Seiya while Taiki's still picking cherry blossoms out of his hair. "How many bases are you guys running to next time?"
"I don't want to hear this", says Yaten, and leaves. Taiki scolds Seiya in turn, but he heads out to buy a sightseeing guidebook.
--
The third time Taiki asks Meioh Setsuna out, somebody sneezes.
"Sorry, sorry," says Seiya, coming out from behind a sign. "Sorry, sorry," says Usagi, coming out from behind Seiya. "But, to save us the trouble, where might you two be headed....?"
Taiki draws himself up to his full height. He tells himself that losing his temper would be unseemly. He is still berating the both of them when the train pulls out of the station, leaving him and Setsuna standing on the platform instead of on their way to Kyoto.
"I can't apologize enough," he says later, handing Setsuna an ice cream cone; plans for the day uprooted, they stroll down the shopping district's street at an easy pace. "What must you think of me..."
"You seem to enjoy life on this planet very much," says Setsuna. "Sometimes it's the people who have nearly lost everything who truly know how to value what's now within their reach."
Taiki considers this, and eats his ice cream in silence. They stop to sit on a bench in the park. Taiki props his arm behind Setsuna's shoulders without making eye contact.
"No one should wander this universe alone," he offers. Setsuna, finishing her ice cream, slides closer.
Seiya is silent when Taiki comes home. Yaten is silent when Taiki comes home. Taiki hums to himself and hangs up his jacket.
"There are some mature people left on this planet," he informs the two people staring at him, then breezes, smiling, out of the room. Peace truly is lovely. One learns to appreciate the little things.
