Summary:Miki sought his shining thing in others, never suspecting that he would find it in himself, with a little help from his best friend.

Miki Kaoru repeated the notes that he'd been taught as a child. He repeated them over and over and over again until they were second nature to him, until he could play that one song and evoke its power regardless of how he felt about it. He played the song because that above all else was his gift; he was talented in academics, he was skilled in fencing, but everyone saw him at the piano and told him that was where he belonged, that was where he shined. Everyone, all the grownups, they never knew that his shine was not inside of him, it was always outside, it was with Kozue. They fell apart, he turned his back on her he lost his shine, but still he played, and still the grownups and everyone else thought his song was just as beautiful.

Miki stopped playing. “What is this Miss Juri?” Miki looked up from the keys at his best friend, the captain of the fencing team, Juri Arisugawa, and then at the sheet of music she'd put down over the one that he and Kozue had composed as children.

“It's Chopin's Revolutionary Etude.” Juri smiled at him. “I thought you could use a change of pace from your usual piece.”

“Ah, thank you Miss Juri, but despite what you might think I'm still not done perfecting The Sunlit Garden; I can't very well work on something new while in the middle of...”

Juri tilted her head and chuckled. “Miki, when people have trouble with a problem, sometimes it helps to step away and focus on something else for a while.” Her words were heavier than they were meant to be. “Give it a chance Miki, you might like playing something different.”

“Well, you haven't led me astray in fencing Miss Juri.” Miki took a deep breath and looked over the unfamiliar melodies. He frowned, this was much faster than his composition. He played, he stopped. The notes clashed, he hit the wrong keys. He looked up and found himself in Juri's eyes. He tried again, he stopped again, and Juri caught him again. He started once more.

“That time was better.” Juri said, and Miki pressed on. He pushed ahead and this time did not care if he missed any notes. This note went on a little too long, that note went by too fast, Miki played them all all the same. He didn't start over until he was finished all the way through, and once he was done again he restarted again.

“Miss Juri.” He said after his 6th iteration of the song. “Why did you pick this one for me to play? It doesn't seem like something you would listen to.”

“True, it really isn't...but that's the point; if we keep listening to the same song, if we keep repeating the same moves, can we really move on?” Juri sounded like she was asking herself more than she was asking Miki.

Even so, Miki wanted to try and answer; Juri had led him so far, taught him so much. He would help her find her answer, even if he didn't understand what it was she was looking for. He played again and again and again. Then came the eleventh go of the song.

The notes flowed, the notes shook and trembled in his being, he saw himself playing the song all aglow. He was shining! He blinked and kept playing, he closed his eyes and kept playing, and still the glow kept on inside of him, that shine that he'd thought he'd lost so long ago. “Miss Juri, I...” Miki stood up from the piano and bowed to her. “Thank you Miss Juri.”

“You're welcome Miki, but really, you put in all the hard work and practice getting this far. I just, nudged you in the right direction, that's all.” Juri motioned for him to stand straight up again. “Do you think you'll be playing your old song again.”

Miki shook his head with a big smile on his face. “My shining thing isn't in that song, it never was.”
