[#002] Motherhood (My Little Pony Friendship is Magic)
Theme Prompt: [002] Practice Makes Perfect
Title: Motherhood
Fandom: My Little Pony Friendship is Magic
Rating/Warnings: Minor spoilers for Cadence’s backstory as revealed in Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 993
Summary: Princess Celestia has been a mother figure but never a mother. Until now. (Inspired by this post.)
Celestia half-mantled her wings as she walked, head bobbing idly up and down with each step as her unshod hooves repeatedly stepped into the deep furrows in her old “pacing carpet”.
This challenge was one she’d never faced before, and it made dinner sit heavy in her stomach. If she messed up, all of Equestria was potentially at stake:
She had to raise the newly-ascended Mi Amore Cadenza (“Cadence. She prefers being called ‘Cadence’,” she reminded herself softly) into a proper princess.
Their kind was so hard to find and Luna was still some years away from being freed, so there was no one else to raise the young filly. Celestia hadn’t even known it was possible for one of the Three Tribes to become an alicorn much less attain it at an age where she had barely finished learning to read and write. Officially the Sun Princess was young Mi-Cadence’s aunt but unofficially she’d become the filly’s second adopted mother, and “mother” was a title Celestia had never held before.
Sighing, Celestia fell onto her bed with a very undignified flop, wings lazily extended. Well, she’d be picking up the child in the morning. Hopefully she was just worrying too much, and motherhood wouldn’t be so bad.
“…In addition to basic schooling and studying magic, you’ll also be tutored in law and diplomacy,” the Sun Princess explained as they rode in the flying chariot. It was a long flight to Canterlot, and she figured the best way to spend it would be to cover the basics. “As much as I hate to do so, you’ll also be taught combat techniques both in magical and non-magical combat. Equestria is a peaceful land, but the lands outside Equestria aren’t always the same way.”
Cadence listened quietly, wings tucked tightly to her sides, idly reaching up to scratch at her new horn. (The nervous little filly had asked her earlier if horns always itched. Celestia had told a little white lie in that the itching would stop soon enough when in reality she had no idea.)
“I’ll be teaching you as much as I can,” the older princess continued, “but unfortunately I do still have responsibilities to the rest of Equestria. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” the little princess said, pawing idly at the cushion they sat on.
Sensing something amiss, Celestia asked, “Is something wrong?”
“Well, um, I was hoping I could get a teacher for something specific.”
Glad to see her new ward was taking an interest in her own education, the Sun Princess coaxed, “I think we could arrange that. What did you want to learn?”
Cadence hunched down, looking for all the world as if she were afraid of retribution. Her voice was so soft that Celestia almost thought she’d imagined her saying “Flying.”
The white alicorn stared, mouth slightly open in surprise. “I…but…you were a…”
“A Pegasus. Raised by Earth Ponies. In an all Earth Pony village,” Cadence said, filling in for the elder princess’s stuttering, her already pink cheeks turning bright red. “I never learned how to fly.”
“Oh. Yes, of course. I’ll find you suitable flight instructors as well. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.”
Being a mother was going to be even harder than she’d originally thought.
“I’msorryI’msorryI’msorry!” Cadence babbled, trying to sweep up the pieces to the shattered vase with her hooves in a very un-princess-like manner.
“It’s all right. I’ll explain to the ambassador about the vase. Magical discharges happen,” Celestia said, hiding her dismay that the gift from the royals of Saddle Arabia had met such an end. It was going to take a lot of political waltzing to smooth over any perceived insult.
Then came frustration. Accidental magical discharges happened, yes, but normally the worst of them were over with prior to a young Unicorn attending school. Cadence was well beyond the typical age for this, but they just kept happening. It didn’t help that Cadence had this bizarre habit of starting up a sneezing fit when she started panicking which, somehow, resulted in more magical discharges.
“You’re going to hurt yourself with the shards. Let Feather Duster take care of it. She at least has a broom. Calm down or you’re going to trigger another—”
As if cued, Cadence sneezed, her horn glowing cyan in response. To Celestia’s horror, a little pink bubble-like heart formed on the tip and released itself in two pieces. Half of it swirled around Feather Duster and the other half circled one of the guards on duty. Then the two halves came together, the whole heart briefly shining before disappearing.
The good news: Cadence’s love magic couldn’t create love from nothing.
The bad news: It brought love to the forefront of the affected’s minds…and apparently the guard and the maid had some very intense feelings for each other.
Celestia swept a wing around her young charge to usher her away, face red, as the mare and stallion started becoming more intimately acquainted right there in the castle gallery.
Being a princess was so much easier than being a mother.
Her leg had fallen asleep hours ago, and she should try and catch up on a little paperwork before she took her own nightly rest, but Celestia didn’t care. Right now, the most important place in all of Equestria for her to be was right here in her chambers with the little filly hugging her leg as she used it as a pillow.
Beside them was a Mother’s Day card. Only the “Mother’s” portion had been scratched out and “Aunt’s” had been written beside it in a child’s scrawl. (Cadence’s magical penmanship still needed work.) Celestia had been surprised to see the sleepy Cadence waiting in her chambers upon her returning from lowering the sun and raising the moon, the little princess wishing her a “Happy Aunt’s Day” before falling asleep on her leg.
Perhaps being a mother wasn’t as hard as she’d thought after all.
