Summary: Princess Allura watches as the paladins try out another training exercise.

I pressed a button on my console and watched on the view screens as laser bolts of energy shot out from the castle’s defences. Blurs of different colours flashed across my field of vision as five giant robotic lions soared over the dusty plains outside. I caught myself gripping the edge of the console with white-knuckled fingers and forced myself to let go. I massaged my hands in turn, eyes fixed on the screens. Would they succeed this time?

As I watched, the lions came together and rocketed straight up into the cloudless blue sky, spinning and weaving to avoid the lethal lasers. Engaged in an intricate dance, they each escaped doom multiple times while still edging closer and closer together. They twisted and changed shape, trailing streams of coloured light. I held my breath as each lion slotted into place, connecting together into the form I knew so well. Voltron, Defender of the Universe, and our only hope in the coming war.

The last connection was made and the huge robotic form drew its sword, deflecting lasers from all directions as it shot through the air towards the castle. Not one beam reached its armoured body and it reached the domed shield around the castle entirely unscathed. I deactivated the defense system and brought the shield down just before Voltron touched down on the bridge.

The paladins had done it! I knew from the moment they woke me after 10,000 years in stasis that they had what it took to save us all. But it had been rocky start to their training and this demonstration of how they were finally working together as a team was just what my weary heart needed.

Coran stepped up next to me.

I beamed at him, clasping my hands together. “They did it! Did you see?”

“Yes, Princess,” he said, peering at the screens. “But what are they doing now?”

I followed his gaze and was astonished to see the massive figure of Voltron gyrating in place. The blue and yellow lion heads that made up its feet were lifting up in turn and twisting back and forth while the red and green lions of its arms were alternately raising into the air before coming back down to its sides.

“I, uh, think they’re dancing,” I said.

Coran let out a noise of utter disgust and reached round me to press the comms button.

“Paladins! Voltron is not a toy! Cease this nonsense at once!”

I laid a hand on Coran’s arm.

“Let them celebrate,” I said. “If nothing else, it shows how well they’re combining control of their individual lions. I doubt even the paladins of old could have pulled off those moves!”
