[#003] Somebody's (Being Human)

Theme Prompt: Domestic Bliss
Title: Somebody's
Fandom: Being Human
Rating/Warnings: N/A
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 647
Summary: McNair never expected to have a settled life

McNair has almost forgotten what it’s like - living in a house. He’d given up that life twenty years ago when he’d been scratched by a werewolf. In all that time he hadn’t even stayed in one town for more than a few weeks. Staying in the B+B had all just been part of the plan to deal with Herrick, but that’s long since done.

This is what he’d wanted though - for Tom, because he hadn’t been sure he’d make it out of the fight with Herrick alive. Tom deserved to be settled though, To have a nice, normal life, finally. And now he’s here he supposes he does too. Anyway it isn’t like they could just leave Annie on her own, is it? Not when they’re all she has now.

He tries not to think about before, when he had a wife It isn’t that hard actually, even though living in a house again, being looked after reminds him or it sometimes. It’s completely different now of course. Annie’s born to look after people, even if she does go a little over the top sometimes. He’s pretty sure no one actually irons newspapers, but she insists, just like she insists on making them breakfast every morning, and dinner every night. Running them baths and ironing their clothes. It’s like she’s watched a few too many films and is trying to be the perfect 50s housewife.

It is nice though. Having a home to come back to rather than a van, and her of course. Annie - who never stops smiling, and even when she does it’s only for a split second and he knows not to draw attention to it.

He tells himself nothing’s going on even as she starts sitting next to him as they watch Scrapheap Challenge, and how she doesn’t go up to bed when Tom does. How she stays downstairs, sitting right beside him, too close really given the size of the sofa, but even if he minded he wouldn’t mention it, only he doesn’t of course. How could he? She’s a bloody angel, taking them in, looking after them the way she does. And maybe she’s just lonely, and really he should probably be encouraging her more towards Tom. He’s closer to her age after all. But somehow this feels more natural. Tom’s just a boy really, and Annie, well he knows now all the things she’s been through. He can’t think of her as a girl anymore. So now it’s just like he’s the dad and she’s the mum and Tom’s the son, a nice normal family like they all deserve.

So really when she turns her head, just before it’s time for him to excuse himself as he always does at this time, and kisses him, it isn’t much of a surprise. And he should probably protest. He’s old enough to be her father, but then her last boyfriend was what? A hundred odd? So it’s all relative really, isn’t it?

“Thank you,” she says, cupping his cheek with her hand, cool and tingly. “For staying, for keeping me sane, for not letting me just drift away like smoke.”

He smiles sadly. It’s so rare that Annie’s honest like this it feels like the most intimate thing in the world. “Thank you for letting me,” he says. “For letting us. You’re an incredible woman, Annie. My avenging angel.”

“Yours?” she asks.
He dips his head then, sheepish and embarrassed. “Sorry, I didn’t mean…”

“No, no. I like that. I think I was always meant to be somebody’s, one way or another. I’ll be yours, and Tom’s, but in slightly different ways, obviously,” she adds in a hurry. “My boys,” she says, leaning in to kiss him again.

“Your boys,” he agrees. “Your man.” It’s his turn to kiss her then. “Your wolf.”

Ahh... I'm not sure which is the remake? I'd been watching the UK version.

Ugh. I figured they'd taken something out, based on what I'd seen. Good to know I started with the right one then

Awww! I don't know the canon, but this was really sweet. I like it when a character finally realizes they've found a home, or remembers what it was like after being away from it.
