[#004] Out Of The Loop (Ace Attorney)
Theme Prompt: Last To Know
Title: Out Of The Loop
Fandom: Ace Attorney
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: No
Word Count: 706
Summary: Maya drops a bombshell on Phoenix, which opens a long-ignored can of worms.
"You two are what and where was I?!"
"Nick, Ema and I are dating." He heard her sigh through the phone. "Lana warned us we should do this in person, but-"
"Lana knew before me?!" It took every ounce of self-control not to slam his head on his desk. He'd been given worse news, a little shock wasn't worth the resulting headache. "Look, Maya, I know you and I haven't seen each other in years, and you're probably still mad at me for being so quiet, but..." Now it was his turn to sigh. "Who else knew about this before I did?"
"Well, Pearly, obviously, but we had to tell her. She took it well after pouting for a bit that my special someone wasn't you. And Mr. Gavin, since Ema was way too eager to tell him she's off the market." Maya giggled. "Let's see, who else..."
"Maya, that was a rhetorical question," Phoenix groaned. "And another thing, why didn't Ema tell me? I still see her, she works with one of my protegés!" He'd had a feeling Ema was seeing someone, she kept disappearing over the weekends and wouldn't tell anyone where she went. Who would have guessed she was disappearing to Kurian?
But if Ema didn't tell you, that just means she didn't want to. You worked with her once, it's not as though she's...
He shifted the phone against his ear, sipping from his now-lukewarm cup of coffee.
"Are you mad at me? I know this is the first time we've talked in years, but...we're still friends, right?
"Well..." Maya sighed on the other end of the phone. "I was the last one to find out you'd lost your badge, and I was mad at you. After all we'd been through together you didn't even try to confide in me at the lowest point of your life! It made me feel bad, like...suddenly you didn't trust me."
Phoenix fell silent. She was right, of course; she was one of his best friends, she'd been part of his life for so long and there was no valid excuse for keeping her in the dark. She'd seen him at his worst plenty of times, and talking to her might have made the past seven years easier.
Trucy knew it, too. Every time she saw the photo albums she asked about Maya, and he'd tell her all kinds of stories. You should call her, Daddy! If she's your friend she and I can help cheer you up! He always made some excuse about how they were both busy, especially Maya with her training, but in the end all it amounted to was shame.
Something he didn't need to feel regarding Maya.
"I guess we're even," he finally said. "I'm sorry, Maya. I should have come to you and Pearls right away." And Edgeworth, if he could track him down. He was apparently doing some investigations in England, last time they'd spoken. "No wonder you didn't feel right coming to me about your love life! But that still doesn't explain Ema...unless you-"
"No, I didn't tell her not to say anything," Maya interrupted. "I may still be a kid at heart but I'm not that petty! Nick, coming out isn't the easiest thing to do...I guess I was a little worried about what you'd think."
"Like I was worried about what you'd think of me losing my badge," Phoenix chuckled weakly. "Well, at least now we both know each other's big secrets."
"Right! And from now on, we won't keep stuff from each other anymore, okay?" As always, pouting Maya was quick to turn right back into perky Maya. Some things never changed.
"I promise. Now that the one who cost me my badge is behind bars, I'm going to take the bar exam again," he said. "And when I get my badge back, you'll be among the first to know. Since, you know, Trucy and Apollo..."
"It's okay! They live with you, after all," Maya giggled. "And someday you need to come for a visit to Kurain with them! I bet Pearly'll get along great with Trucy." They probably would, Phoenix thought with a smile. And Apollo would get a kick out of the culture, too.
"I'll see if we can tag along with Ema when she comes to visit you this weekend."
