[#034] I Wanna Grow Old Before I Grow Up (From Dusk Til Dawn)
Theme Prompt: #034 – Warning Shot
Title: I Wanna Grow Old Before I Grow Up
Fandom: From Dusk Till Dawn (TV Show)
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 529
Summary: The Gecko brothers gather up their latest score.
The shot rings through the bank, reverberating off the walls and echoing into the marble architecture above. The security guard, who had been reaching for his weapon, freezes, and goes to meet the eyes of the bank robber who had fired the shot in question.
Seth Gecko does not relish threatening the civilians. He doesn’t. He doesn’t enjoy the idea of taking the life of someone he doesn’t have to take. But if he has to fire a warning shot to prove a point, to ensure that he gets what his, he will.
He lifts the arm extended out in front of him, curling the weapon back towards his shoulder as he steps away from the safe Richie is currently trying to crack. He lets his eyes wander over the group in front of him before he proclaims, in his guy-in-control voice: “Did I not make it clear how I felt about heroes?” He glances at the rest of the room, which greets him with silence as he continues to stride closer. Each of them gets briefly appraised before he turns and points to one of them the hostages. “What did I say about heroes?”
“That being a hero is a fast way of getting dead.” The woman’s voice quivers under pressure, and that’s good. That means she’s scared enough not to do anything stupid.
“Exactly. Being a hero is a fast way of getting dead.” He punctuates each word with a wave of his gun hand, and he can hear the way they hold their breath each time he does. He then turns to face the security guard who tried to get one by him. “It’s really not that complicated. You don’t play hero; you get to go home tonight to your wife and kids. Simple as that.”
Silence fills the room, and no one seems to move, so he takes the opportunity to glance back to Richie, who is still working on the safe in question. The safe had been a complicated one, but with Richie’s safe-cracking skills, they should have been done and gone by now, and every moment they linger is another moment that risks the police showing up.
“How are we doing here?”
“Almost there.”
“You said you were almost there five minutes ago.”
“Then now I’m almost-almost there. Breathe, okay? I got this.”
Seth huffs, before turning his attention back to the hostages again, trying not to let the tension of the situation get the best of him as he waits for his brother to finish the job they started, and can’t help but exhale the breath he’s holding when he hears the tell-tale sound of the safe opening. He turns around quickly to help Richie clear it out, just as sirens start to wail in the distance. Slinging one bag over his shoulder, he waves a hand to the rest of the room and flashes them a grin.
“Thank you for being such a captive audience.”
And with that, he and Richie duck out the back like they were never even there. It’s not what their hostages will tell the cops, but at least all of them will live to say it.
