Word Count: 803
Summary: Olivia has a field trip that doesn’t go her way.

Olivia is having a Day. She’s really disappointed in this day if she’s going to be quite honest. Having started on such a high note, today’s events only went downhill from there.

First, her mother had to leave for business so she couldn’t chaperone the zoo field trip as planned, so Olivia’s stuck with her dad instead. Nothing against her dad, but being the stay at home parent while her mother often travels, her father winds up doing most school things. Olivia wanted something different.

Second, she got bus sick on the way there because of the stupid bumpy road, and while she did manage to avoid throwing up on anyone because of her dad’s quick thinking, the bus still had to stop for her while she was sick on the side of the road, and now her entire class knows it’s happened. She’ll never hear then end of it.

Third, as they arrived at the zoo, the sign at the ticket gate indicated that the polar bears would not be out today, which was the icing on the immensely disappointing cake. Still, Olivia bottled it all in, to the best of her ability, figuring that a day at the zoo was still a good time – even if she didn’t get to see her Favorite Animal of All Time. (Which, if she’s candid with herself, is just the last six months. She’s eight, not eighty).

Then, in the middle of the day, it starts to rain, and all of these little inconveniences and disappointments explode when the teacher regretfully informs them that they’re going to have to cut the trip short and head back to the bus.

“No!!”

Sam looks baffled as his normally well-behaved child explodes in a shower of anger and tears. She slips free of his hand and takes off into the zoo, charging towards the exhibits. Eventually, his brain stutters into gear before turning and following after her.

“Olivia, wait!”

“No!! I’m not leaving!!”

Unfortunately for Olivia, her father’s legs are much longer than hers so that he can cover a lot more ground in a much shorter period. As far as she tries to run, he catches her first, stepping in front of her and crouching down so he could meet her eye level.

“Liv, stop.”

She tries to find a way to dart around him, but escape is useless, and she doesn’t know how to proceed. So instead, she proceeds to cross her arms in front of her chest and stare her father down. “I’m not going home!”

“Sweetheart, it’s pouring rain. And we gotta stay with your teachers.”

“No! Nothing has gone the way it was supposed to today, and I want to stay at the zoo!”

Sam’s face softens some before reaching over and picking up his daughter, taking her over to one of the nearby benches. He tries to find one that’s out of the rain, but since Olivia seems committed to getting wet at this point, he’s just going to let her. He sighs as he sits down next to her, trying to figure out what to do next.

“I’m sorry today hasn’t gone the way you wanted it to, honey.”

Olivia’s scowl relents. “It was supposed to be a good day.”

“I know it was.”

“I wish it never happened.”

“That’s fair.” Sam sighs as he looks around the clearing pathways leading to the various exhibits. “But I think even if we stay here in the rain, there’s not going to be much to see. The animals don’t want to be out in the rain either.

She looks up at him, big watery eyes and a quivering chin, and he knows he has to change tactics fast if he wants to get anywhere in this particular situation without a meltdown.

But, maybe we could pick another day and do a do-over?”

“A do-over?”

“We’ll pick a weekend day when the weather’s good, and we’ll come through and see the whole zoo.”

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

“Even the polar bears?”

“Especially the polar bears.”

“And Mom will come?”

Sam’s face softens again, before nodding as he drapes an arm around her shoulders to pull her closer. “I’ll make sure of it.”

There’s a brief sniffle, but no tears. After a moment, Olivia looks up at her father and nods. “Okay. We can do a do-over.”

“Good.”

“Dad?”

“Yeah, sweetheart?”

“My clothes are really soggy.”

Sam laughs before pulling back and looking down at her. “Yeah, mine too. Think we can get back on the bus now?”

Olivia nods, sliding off the bench and taking his hand. He gives it a small squeeze in return, before leading them off back to the school bus. A couple of days later, both of them wind up with terrible, terrible colds, but that’s a disappointing day for another time.
