[#090] Seeing Things That I May Never See Again (Original)
Theme Prompt: 090 – Road Trip
Title: Seeing Things That I May Never See Again
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 987
Summary: Nik and Nadia get sent on a sibling road trip.
It all began when Victor said the dreaded words “road trip.”
While Nadia is one to travel – she’s likely jet-set her way around the world several times over at this point; she usually does it by plane. While her brother Nikolai would take that motorcycle of his anywhere if he could, Nadia prefers the comforts of a first-class plane seat. She can get where she needs to go in half the time and before boredom or car sickness sinks in. No messy rest stops, no questionable food. Just a few hours in the air, and she lands, refreshed and ready to begin her adventure.
She’s less than thrilled by this endeavor already.
“I’m sorry – did you say road trip?”
Victor looks over at her apologetically, as he already knows what her objections are going to be. “I know this isn’t your favorite form of travel, Nadia, but the leaders we’re looking to see aren’t somewhere you can get to by plane. There’s at least a six-hour drive from the nearest airport.
Nadia groans, tipping her head backward. As the second in command of the pack, if Victor can’t attend this particular summit, she knows that she will have to go in his place. And she’s not looking forward to spending a total of twelve hours in a car for these peace talks.
“Are you sure we have to be there? We don’t even know this pack. We couldn’t have offended them that deeply.”
“We didn’t, but the Emerson pack did. And given our good standing and the fact that they’re our allies, we need to make sure they right those wrongs.”
“And you’re not going yourself because?”
“I’m the alpha,” Victor replies. Most people would consider that a valid reason enough, but given that she knows her brother, she can’t help but pick out the underlying tone of “because I said so.”
She takes another deep breath before shaking her head. “I hate you.”
“You love me. I’m your brother.”
She makes a face before revising. “I strongly dislike you right now.”
Victor laughs before shaking his head. “Fair enough. But I promise this won’t be as bad as you think.”
“How do you know?” Nadia raises an eyebrow. “Have you ever even been there?”
“No,” he says, clapping her on the shoulder. “But Nik has. He’s going to be your travel buddy.”
Nadia turns to look at her younger brother, who looks up at her with a grin. Nadia’s eyes narrow in response. “No gross food, no sleazy hotels and no terrible road playlists.”
Nik nods in agreement. “Yeah, of course.” Then he grins again. “This’ll be fun.”
Nadia grumbles before turning to make her way out of the room. “Somehow, I seriously doubt that.”
* * * * *
“Are we there yet?”
Nadia’s exasperated voice fills the small car’s cabin as she reaches over to test the air conditioning again. The blistering heat of the desert sun was almost too much for the vehicle to keep up, which means for as hot as it was in the car at the moment, it was probably worse outside. She glances over to her brother, who is squinting into the distance, looking for landmarks he wasn’t finding.
“Not yet,” Nik replies, the frown still evident on his face. “But we’ll be there soon.”
Nadia squints back at him, concerned, and crosses her arms in front of her chest. “Are we lost?”
“We are not lost.”
“You do not sound very confident.”
“We are not lost. I’m just not entirely sure where we are.”
Nadia’s hands ball into fists. “That is literally the definition of being lost.”
“No, we’re not lost. I know we’re in the general vicinity of where we need to be. I have to remember how to get down into the settlement.”
Nadia’s fists relax gently, but that’s more out of confusion than anything else. “Down?”
“You don’t think these people are living out directly in the desert sun, do you?” Nik raises an eyebrow at her in return as he continues to guide the SUV deeper into the desert. “They live underground where it’s cooler. I have to remember how to get down there.”
“Are you sure that we can get down there?”
“Yes. There’s a landmark. I’ll know it when I see it. Will you relax?”
Nadia holds up her hands before slumping back into the seat and letting him do his thing. Another hour passes, and she’s starting to get even more concerned. “Nik?”
“Don’t.”
“I’m just—”
“I said don’t!” He slams on the brakes as they come to a stop before pointing at her face with one finger. “Will you just let me do the driving? I don’t need you criticizing everything I do.”
The car shifts slightly underneath them, the passenger side starting to dip slightly. “Nik …”
“And for one thing, I get that I’m the little brother, but I am a full-grown adult man, and I wish that you guys would acknowledge that every once in a while.”
There was a crack somewhere underneath them, and Nadia’s eyes go wide. “Nik!”
“What?!”
Before Nadia could get it out, the bottom of the car lurches forward, and both siblings scream. Nik’s foot slides off the brake, and the car starts to roll forward, down on an incline into the space below them. As they head further into darkness, he scrambles to get control of his senses and eventually manages to slam on the breaks.
First, there’s silence. Then, as the siblings start to look around, they see a small cluster of people gathered in what seems to be some underground bunker. Nik lifts his hand with a wave, and they wave in return. He then turns to his sister with a grin.
“See? Told you we weren’t lost.”
Nadia rolls her eyes before sliding out of the car. She knew this was going to be a long trip.
