[#090] Library Card Not Included (Transformers MTMTE)

Theme Prompt: 090 - Road Trip
Title: Library Card Not Included
Fandom: Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye
Rating/Warnings: G / None
Bonus: No
Word Count: 992
Summary: Nautica knows the most important thing to pack for a long intergalactic trip.

"Nautica, do you really need all of these datapads?" Chromia gave the three neat stacks (organized by subject, first author, and first title, in that order) a skeptical stare. "I know you would spend every waking second reading if you could, but don't those datapads hold something like a hundred and sixty books each?"

"One hundred and ninety-three, if you know how to bypass the storage limits and remove some of the default programming," Nautica said cheerfully. "Which I do. And yes, I do need all of them. Who knows how hard it'll be to get new books out in space?"

Chromia sighed and began loading datapads into a subspace box. "I'm sure you'll have plenty to do on board. You're going because they need an engineer, not a librarian - you won't have time to read a hundred and ninety-three books, let alone twenty times that."

"Haven't we had this conversation before, Chromia? Never underestimate a reader." Nautica reached into the box and adjusted the stack to make sure the datapads had stayed in order. "Besides, the ship might not have much of a library. Who knows how long we're going to be in space?"

"Hopefully not long enough for you to read all of those," Chromia muttered, setting the next stack into the box.

Her first night on the Lost Light, Nautica skipped the launch festivities and went in search of a quiet spot. She was reasonably sure it wouldn't be hard to find; judging by the sheer racket from Swerve's Definitely Not A Bar Don't Look Here Magnus, every member of the crew who wasn't currently on duty had crowded into a relatively small space, leaving the rest of the ship more or less deserted.

The hallways didn't feature a lot of comfortable spots to sit, or much of a view. The bridge was out of the question, and she couldn't exactly let herself into the medbay or Rung's office looking for a reading corner. She was just considering returning to her habsuite - at least it had a window, even if it was a tiny one - when she found herself in the hallway just below the bridge, gazing out through a series of massive windows that showed a stunning starfield stretching out to what would have been the horizon if they'd been on-planet.

She found a crevice in the wall where a frame of her size could easily sit and hauled herself up. Leaning back against a pipe with her feet propped up on a strut, she fished out her datapad and opened it to The Asteroid Association Guide to the Lifeforms of the Galaxy, chapter six.

She was almost to chapter seven when footsteps echoed down the hallway, and an ominous shadow blocked out the view of the starfield. Nautica looked up sharply, but for once, didn't speak.

Megatron paused outside the bridge entrance, gazing out at the starfield. If he noticed Nautica, he didn't acknowledge her, instead watching the stars slowly turn for what felt like an eternity. Nautica held very still; for once in her life, she was fairly sure this was not a situation that would be improved by speaking.

Just as Nautica had convinced herself that he hadn't noticed her, Megatron spoke without turning around. "You brought reading material for the trip?"

"Of course! I assumed I was going to need it. I mean, I'm sure the Lost Light has a perfectly nice library - " Actually, she wasn't sure of that at all. " - but I like knowing that I have everything I might possibly need. Always be prepared, right? Especially for long nights with not much to do?"

Megatron studied her for a moment and nodded with what might have been approval. Then he turned, ran a hand over the doorpad, and vanished into the bridge.

Nautica closed her datapad, hurriedly dropped down from her perch, and took off toward her habsuite. As nice as the view was, maybe it was better to read in her own space for a while.

"Are you trying to read and work on the engines simultaneously?"

Nautica jumped, dropped her datapad, and scrambled to retrieve it, faceplate heating with embarrassment. "Don't sneak up on me like that! And for your information, I'm doing research on quantum engines while standing in front of one, because that's the best place to be when doing research. You can't tell me you've never done that."

Brainstorm shrugged in acknowledgement. "Guilty as charged. How many books did you bring with you, anyway? I've seen you with at least nine different datapads."

"First, honestly, it is a little weird that you're tracking how many datapads I have, especially since they all look exactly the same," Nautica said, trying to look stern and suspecting that she thoroughly failed. "Second...well, each datapad holds one hundred and ninety-three books, and I brought all of my datapads. You stopped listening at one hundred and ninety-three, didn't you?"

Brainstorm had so thoroughly stopped listening that he didn't even react to being called out on not listening. "Does something seem wrong about that view?"

Nautica glanced out the window and shrugged. "Not really. Why?"

Brainstorm had stopped listening again. Nautica sighed and went back to her datapad. Two more minutes and she could probably finish the chapter.

"Are you really bringing a datapad on an away mission?" Skids eyed the spot where Nautica had tucked her datapad into subspace with a raised brow ridge.

"You never know when you'll need some good reading material! Besides, it's only one, so it's not like it's taking up much space." Nautica carefully edge past him on the way to the shuttle.

"Only one? Why, did you think about bringing more?"

"I could have." Nautica turned back just far enough to grin at him. "But I'll share, if you're already bored."

Skids groaned. "Trust me, I don't think any of us are going to be bored."
