Summary: MG presses Hope for details about her dragon fight.

“I can’t believe I missed a dragon.” MG flops down onto the couch next to Hope, eyes bright with curiosity. While he and Hope are not what anyone would call the best of friends, they’re at least friendly, and he feels like she’s a good option to bug about their fiery adventure. “I mean, I always knew there were bigger, better things out there, but I didn’t think that you would just stumble over one in the woods.”

Hope raises an eyebrow at him curiously. “I wouldn’t exactly call it stumbling. She set a bus full of people on fire first.”

“… Fair. But still. You and Raf are officially dragon slayers now.” He flashes her a pleading grin. “Can I get some of the details? Please?”

Hope looks flustered, unaccustomed to bragging about her accomplishments to other people. Given that she and Dr. Saltzman are the only two returning from the trip, she’s not sure she has much of a choice. Someone has to tell the story.

“She didn’t present as a dragon at first. She just looked like a human who happened to breathe fire. It wasn’t until we stabbed her in the heart that she, you know, turned into a dragon.”

“How big was she at her full dragon size?”

Hope shrugs because she wasn’t sure of accurate estimation. “Big? Like … blue whale-sized, maybe?”

“Huh. I thought it’d be bigger.”

Hope snorts at the look on his face before shaking her head. “Trust me. It’s big enough.”

“So how did you wind up beating it?”

“I cast a spell that put it back into human form. And before it set me on fire, Dr. Saltzman found the spot that would kill it. I was trying to figure out what she wanted the knife for, but … I don’t think she could speak.”

Which was not helpful in the grand scheme of things. And it was also quite concerning, giving everything that’s happened. Someone felt the need to send a dragon after something. Whatever it is, it has to be something powerful. And who knows what might come after it next.

MG watches her as her brain starts to spiral out into Worst-Case-Scenario land, and he shakes his head before nudging her shoulder gently. “C’mon, Hope. Don’t start worrying about the big bad just yet.”

Hope raises an eyebrow before holding a hand out to him. “Hi, I’m Hope. Have we met?”

MG laughs before looping an arm around her shoulders. “I know, I know. But I think you should relax and bask in the glory. You earned it. Given that you saved the day, you’re allowed to have a little fun every once in a while.”

He raises an eyebrow at her in return, daring her to defy him, and she sighs before shaking her head.

“You make it hard to say no. You know that, right?”

MG grins. “It’s a gift.”

“So, how would you recommend celebrating my grand dragon victory?”

“I would start with celebratory milkshakes and at least a little bit of bragging before you go into full worry mode.”

Hope nods as she gets ready to push herself up. “I think I can handle a milkshake.” She then turns and tips her head to the side. “Do you … want to come with me?” She’s still so awkward at making friends and not being the sad girl who just wanted to be alone, but she’s trying.

Maybe that’ll help keep her from giving in to her father.

“Hell yeah. I’m always down for milkshakes.” As he jumps to his feet, he takes her hand before sliding his arm around her shoulders again. “I’ll even say they’re on me.”
