[#095] Don't Know Why There's No Sun Up in the Sky (The Vampire Diaries)
Theme Prompt: #095 – Unexpected Weather
Title: Don’t Know Why There’s No Sun Up in the Sky
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 812
Summary: The adults scramble together to save the twins’ birthday party from the weather.
Thunder cracks overhead and Caroline’s eyes shoot to the sky above her. The gray clouds rumble as they make their presence known over the pre-planned birthday party. She had spent hours getting the decorations perfect for the twins’ sixth birthday, and now it appears Mother Nature seems intent to spoil all her hard work. Lizzie and Josie seem to sense it too, looking up at the foreboding sky with a hint of concern.
“Mommy? Is there something wrong?”
“Nope. Nothing’s wrong, Josie. Why would you say that?”
“The sky looks angry,” Lizzie supplies. “And you’re wearing your unhappy face.”
“The sky looks a little angry, but this is not my unhappy face.” Caroline pastes on a smile to show the girls that she is very much not unhappy at all. “See? All smiles.”
“Are we going to cancel our party?”
“Nope. The party will go on. We just might have to… improvise.” She pauses and gestures them away from the door. “Why don’t you go help Daddy with the party favors while Mommy tries to figure this out?”
The twins dash off, as expected, when Damon comes in from the opposite direction, glancing around curiously. He takes one look at Caroline, his eyebrows rising in surprise and he turns to sneak out before she can notice him, but too late.
“You! You’re going to help me.”
“Aren’t I technically a guest, blondie?” Damon replies as he turns to face her, raising an eyebrow. “You shouldn’t rope guests into housework. Where are your manners?”
“You’re not a guest. You are an able-bodied man who is going to help me get all of this back inside quickly before the rain ruins everything.”
“Are you sure it’s going to rain? The weather says seventy and sunny.” Another rumble of thunder rolls in overhead and Damon holds up a finger. “That could be a plane.”
“Damon…”
“Damon, help her,” Ric’s voice comes from the other room, and Damon grumbles in response.
“Fine, fine. What are we doing?”
“Just gather all the decorations off the tables. We’ll set them back up in here—the tables are plastic. If they get rained on, they’ll be fine. I’ll go handle the game areas and make sure we get everything inside.”
“You are aware that I’m human now, and I no longer have vamp speed, right?”
Caroline’s fists crawl into balls, and Elena promptly comes around the corner, shaking her head. “I’ll help too. Don’t worry. We will get everything inside.” Elena takes Damon by the arm, dragging him out with her so that they can get to work.
Caroline takes a breath as she watches them go, before turning her attention to her areas of the yard. “It’s just a few more hours, and then Damon goes home. You can do it.”
Let’s just hope it doesn’t rain on them.

They make it back inside before the rain begins. The skies open up just as the first of the small children invited from Josie and Lizzie’s class arrive. The party itself is a rousing success, although they have much less space to burn off that excess sugar. By the end of the day, all four adults collapse on the couch, exhausted. Lizzie and Josie are off comparing and contrasting their presents, trying to see who got the better haul.
“The party was great, Caroline,” Elena smiles, reaching over to squeeze her friend’s hand. “It seems like the girls really enjoyed it.”
“Yeah,” Caroline smiles. “I just wish we could have had it outside. But that’s what being flexible is for, right?”
“Flexible? Is that what we’re calling it when we can’t bend the whims of Mother Nature to our will?” Damon smirks, and Caroline rolls her eyes.
“Don’t start.”
“Inside or outside, the kids had a good time, and I think that’s what matters,” Elena nods. “Ignore him.”
“No matter how hard I try, he still likes to make himself known.” Caroline flashes Damon a look, and Damon gets to his feet.
“I could use another beer. Want another beer, Ric?”
“Yeah, a beer sounds good,” Ric sighs as he gets to his feet and follows Damon out into the kitchen. The two women glance at each other before shaking their heads and enjoying that they now had the living room to themselves.
“Hey, Mommy! The sky doesn’t look angry anymore!”
Caroline’s eyebrows go up at the sound of Josie’s voice, and she turns to the window to peer outside. Elena follows her lead and as they part the curtains, they see the sunshine peeking through the clouds, brightening up the front yard of the Saltzman home.
“Are you kidding me?!” Caroline sighs. “Where was this three hours ago?”
Elena laughs, before placing a hand on her friend’s shoulder and squeezing it gently. “I don’t know. I guess you win some, you lose some.”
