[#104] A Stunning Realization (MDZS)
Theme Prompt: #104 - Only One Room
Title: A Stunning Realization
Fandom: MDZS
Rating/Warnings: G / Gaaaaaaaay
Bonus: No
Word Count: 1,000
Summary: Forgive me, Xichen.
“There must be some mistake, I booked my room over a month ago. The confirmation e-mail is here on my phone,” Lan Xichen explained to the desk clerk.
The young woman gave him a conciliatory smile. “I’m very sorry sir, but it says here a notification was sent out last week, we had to cancel your reservation due to storm damage. Half of the hotel is under repairs, unsafe to occupy. Surely you saw the news?”
Lan Xichen frowned, remembering several comments about freak weather in this region now that he thought about it. He scrolled through his e-mails once more. Then realized he had a new personal assistant who had made several beginner’s mistakes.
He checked the spam folder. Sure enough, there was the e-mail from the hotel explaining the situation and receipt of his refund.
“Oh that Jingyi,” he sighed, exasperated.
“I’m very sorry, sir.” The desk clerk offered a series of brochures. “We have several competitors in the area who could accommodate you in the morning, sir. Unfortunately, there’s a curfew in effect right now, in an attempt to limit non-essetnial travel. I don’t think you’ll be able to get a room.”
“What are my options, then?”
“Well I suppose you could sleep in a chair in our lobby,” the clerk said, sounding dubious.
Lan Xichen’s reluctant acceptance of the offer was interrupted by the elevator. He and the clerk turned in tandem to see a handsome man wearing shorts, slippers, and a very thin tank top. Lan Xichen, of course, knew the man. Jiang Wanyin, his brother’s fiancee’s younger brother, was well-known in their circle as a shrewd, sharp-tongued business man.
His brain had stalled out, however, over Jiang Wanyin’s barely concealed, very toned torso. And those bare legs. Lan Xichen had been vaguely aware that the youngest Jiang heir had made a name for himself as a professional swimmer before retiring to take his place in the Jiang business conglomerate after his parents’ death.
He had not connected the dots, however. Lan Xichen was coming to the startling realization there were a great many dots he hadn’t connected. Which, given his own brother’s preferences, should have been connected much sooner.
There, at nearly midnight in a hotel lobby, staring at his soon-to-be brother-in-law, Lan Xichen had his gay awakening.
“Xichen-ge!” Jiang Wanyin gave him a polite smile. “Are you staying here, too?”
“Ah, no, as a matter of fact. My reservation was cancelled but my personal assistant is new and didn’t catch it,” Lan Xichen replied, mouth on autopilot while his brain frantically reframed every interaction he’d ever had with this man whose cheekbones could slice diamonds and whose smile could shame the stars.
Jiang Wanyin frowned, turning to the clerk. “Is it all right if he stays in my room? He’s a family friend anyhow.”
The clerk brightened, smiling. “Oh that would be wonderful solution! Please accept this voucher for free room service, starting tomorrow, as compensation for the imposition!”
She thrust the voucher and several others into Jiang Wanyin’s hand. Puzzled, Jiang Wanyin accepted and gave Xichen a rueful grin. “If you don’t mind, that is. You might have other plans?”
“No, as a matter of fact, the option was going to be sleeping in the lobby,” Lan Xichen’s mouth said while Lan Xichen’s brain blue screened to the tune of a pterodactyl screeching. “Thank you, Wanyin, that’s very kind.”
“It’s fine.” Jiang Wanyin turned to the clerk. “I actually came down for an extra pillow. Could we get some more towels, too, please?”
“Of course!” The desk clerk disappeared into the room behind the counter, returning quickly with towels, a blanket, a pillow, and a basket of travel-sized toiletries. “Is there anything else I can do for you?”
Jiang Wanyin smiled, shaking his head. Lan Xichen’s brain made dial-up noises as that smile was turned on him. “Come on, Xichen-ge, we’re on the fifth floor.”
Lan Xichen followed, helplessly.
The elevator was a bad idea, he realized almost instantly. Wanyin's hair had a healthy shine and his tanned skin glowed even beneath the harsh fluorescent lighting. Lan Xichen was close enough to see freckles across the bridge of Wanyin’s nose and across his upper back, close enough to smell the lotus and fresh water scent of Wanyin’s clean skin.
His knees shook.
They emerged and Lan Xichen wobbled like a newborn foal, stumbling behind Jiang Wanyin. The view was excellent.
“I bet you want a shower, huh, Xichen-ge? Good thing we got extras of everything. I bet if that winery tour group hadn’t come in an hour ago, you’d have been able to get a room. I guess I’m lucky to be here for work and not a ruined vacation.”
“Very lucky,” Lan Xichen’s mouth agreed while his brain stuck to the idea of using Wanyin’s shower.
Jiang Wanyin smiled and used his key on a random door. “This is us, Xichen-ge, five-fifteen. Just put your stuff anywhere.”
“Thank you again, Wanyin.”
"Sure thing.” Jiang Wanyin put the stack of items on the dresser that held a TV tuned in to local news, volume low. “Make yourself at home.”
The room was clean and the decor was tasteful, sandy browns and seafoam greens, with generic pastel landscapes on the walls. Jiang Wanyin’s belongings were tucked tidily away, save for his laptop on the small desk and a paperback on the nightstand.
The nightstand beside the bed.
The only bed.
One bed in the room.
Lan Xichen checked, the only doors were to the bathroom and the hall.
There was only one bed.
It was a king sized bed.
They would be sharing it.
“I think I’ll just get that shower now,” Lan Xichen’s mouth said. “I’m more exhausted than I thought.”
Jiang Wanyin, already focused on the laptop, gave him a hum in acknowledgement. He’d put on a pair of glasses.
Lan Xichen’s brain quit.
