[#105] The Space Pirate of Your Dreams

Theme Prompt: 105- Pirates
Title: The Space Pirate of Your Dreams
Fandom: Transformers More Than Meets The Eye
Rating/Warnings: G / None
Bonus: No
Word Count: 848
Summary: The Lost Light has never met space pirates, but if they did, they probably wouldn't resemble the heroes of Nautica's favorite romance novel.

"So, you've been out here a while," Nautica began, with a sparkle in her optics that meant she was definitely up to something. Skids raised a brow ridge, waiting for the next wheel to drop. "Have you ever met a real space pirate?"

That question was at least two wheels dropping at once. Skids blinked. "Space pirates."

"Yeah. You know, like the ones in the - " Nautica broke off, EM field fluctuating slightly with embarrassment. "I mean, I've read about them. They're a known phenomenon in some sectors. I just wondered if the Lost Light had run into any."

"Somehow, no, being boarded by pirates is one of the few catastrophes we haven't had to deal with yet," Skids said dryly. "Unless you count Whirl, which I don't, and Riptide, who says he 'can't confirm or deny any allegations of piratical activity in the recent past', and yes, that is a direct quote. Why d'you ask?"

Nautica giggled. "They're not really what I had in mind, but if I need a pirate, I guess I know who to talk to."

Skids made an expression of mock alarm. "Please tell me you don't actually need a pirate. Or at least, if you do need a pirate, tell me it's for theoretical reasons and not because you want to start a new career."

"Of course not!" Nautica paused, as if reconsidering her answer. "I mean, I have some research projects I could talk to a pirate about, I guess. But I haven't really started any of those yet, and since I don't know for sure what I'd have to work with - " She broke off with a sheepish grin. "Honestly, I just thought it might be cool to hear about real space pirates after all the books I've read about them. I think it'd be an adventure."

"If you think this ship isn't already adventurous enough, I'd hate to see your definition of 'too exciting'," Skids teased. Nautica grinned.

"Oh, I didn't mean that kind of adventure. Not the dangerous kind, anyway."

"I didn't think there was a non-dangerous kind. At least not when you're talking about unexplored space." Skids leaned back against the wall until he was at the right angle to stare out at the stars. "Even the pirates in the holovids Rodimus likes are a little dangerous. Unless you're talking about those terrible romance novels where the pirates are the dashing love interests, I guess."

He expected Nautica to immediately deny that, and when she didn't, glanced over in surprise. Her EM field brightened in an embarrassed blush, but she shrugged and said, "Well, you know...everyone knows those aren't realistic, but some of them are pretty good. There's one about this space pirate captain and her ex who's a rival pirate, and they..." She trailed off with a sheepish grin. "It's really not bad."

Skids studied her for a moment, a slow smile forming. "You're saying you were hoping for a dashing space pirate captain to sweep you off your feet?"

"No! No, of course not - not seriously." Nautica hid her face in her hands, though the warmth in her EM field made it clear she wasn't actually upset. "I mean - if there was a dashing space pirate captain somewhere along the way, I'm not saying I'd be complaining, but - of course not, I know that's not really how space adventures work."

Skids reached out with his own field to give her a light electromagnetic nudge. "You sure? Because I think we could probably convince Riptide to reprise the past career that he definitely didn't have - "

"Don't you dare tell Riptide I'm looking for a dashing space pirate captain! I will magnetize your bunk." Nautica's threat was thoroughly undercut by a fit of giggles. "Seriously, I can't be the only one on this trip who's at least thought about how space compares to romance novels. I might be the only one who read the pirate ones, but I promise you I'm not the only one daydreaming about it sometimes. Swerve, for one - "

"The less said about Swerve's personal daydreams, the better." Skids' smile turned fond, despite the words. "So if we do run into space pirates, I suppose as a good friend it's my job to be your wingmech. Does this dashing pirate have to be the captain?"

"Oh, stop it." Nautica mock-glared at him, but couldn't hold the expression for long. "Like you said, real space pirates are the last thing we need on this trip." After a pause, she added thoughtfully, "But it wouldn't have to be a captain, as long as they were suitably adventurous and romantic."

"Well, I'm glad we got that cleared up." An alarm beeped in the hallway, and Skids pushed himself off the wall. "And just in time, too. Sounds like one of the captains wants us on the bridge, and you know what that means."

"Probably not space pirates?" Nautica offered.

"Probably not space pirates. But if it is, I'll keep an optic open for your dream mech."

"Oh, shush."
