“There he is!” An annoyingly loud voice broke Lan Wangji’s hard-won peace, the sudden noise scattering the many bunnies that had gathered as he meditated in this suprisingly well-tended meadow.
Lan Wangji allowed himself a sigh then rose to his feet. He brushed grass from the traditional robes every student had been issued upon entry and glared at his boyfriend. Cloud Recesses was a place filled with history and wisdom; meant for quiet contemplation and earnest study. It was not meant for loud-mouthed barbarians galomping along like unruly beasts.
He leveled a glare at his boyfriend, who wisely stopped in his tracks and looked apologetic.
“Sorry, Bunny,” Wen Chao offered, extending one hand towards Lan Wangji and rubbing the back of his neck in a sheepish gesture with the other. “I got excited. Both of our universities choosing today to visit this dusty old place, what are the odds?”
Lan Wangji lifted his chin, unimpressed. But he put his hand in the other boy’s and let himself be tugged back towards the tour groups.
“I really am sorry.” Wen Chao reached out to tuck a lock of hair behind Lan Wangji’s ear. “You looked so serene, like you’re made for this place. I’m sorry I ruined the moment.”
“Forgiven,” Lan Wangji squeezed Wen Chao’s hand. The unruly Wen rarely apologized sincerely to anyone but him. It was important to reinforce good behavior. “This is my family’s legacy. Like the castle in Shaanxi is yours.”
Wen Chao’s mouth made a perfect ‘o’. “Zhanbun, I was so excited to see you, I didn’t even think about what the trip meant to you. I’m a beast!”
“Mm,” Lan Wangji agreed. He tugged until he held Wen Chao’s hand pressed over his own heart. “My beast. My firebird.”
“Bunny.” Wen Chao licked his lips and glanced around.
No one had even noticed their return. He quickly led Lan Wangji away from the other students and down a side path until they came to a secluded pavilion.
“Come here,” he said, sitting on the porch.
He tugged on their still-clasped hands, pulling Lan Wangji onto his lap. Lan Wangji went willingly, his knees on either side of Wen Chao’s thighs. Lan Wangji looked down at Wen Chao from his vantage, the boy’s golden skin and soot-black hair. The arrogant sneer that always lingered around the corners of Wen Chao’s mouth when he was with anyone else was gone now, replaced with a soft look of wonder.
Lan Wangji was reminded that he supported reinforcing good behavior. He bent his head and laid soft kisses on Wen Chao’s forehead and nose, before giving his boyfriend a real kiss, right on the mouth.
Wen Chao groaned and wrapped his arms around Lan Wangji’s back, burying his face against Lan Wangji’s chest. “You make it very hard to be a virtuous young disciple, Lan Wangji,” he muttered against the fabric of Lan Wangji’s robes.
“We agreed to wait,” Lan Wangji said. “Until we graduate college. Two more years.”
Wen Chao bit Lan Wangji’s robe and tugged, making the breath stutter on its way to Lan Wangji’s lungs. Wen Chao released the fabric and gave a lazy, smug grin. But he merely laid a reverential kiss on the t-shirt Lan Wangji wore beneath the robe and lay his cheek against it.
“Listen,” he said, all soft with wonder again. “Can you hear it?” He nuzzled his cheek against Lan Wangji’s chest. “Your heartbeat is so fast, right now.”
“Mn,” Lan Wangji managed, threading his fingers in Wen Chaos fancy prep-school haircut.
His boyfriend’s hair was soft as satin against his palms. It was so different than Lan Wangji’s. He kept his hair long, using traditional oils instead of modern products.
They were so different, he and his firebird. Lan Wangji played the guqin and excelled at calligraphy. Wen Chao played an electric guitar and excelled at driving cars very fast at 3 am. Lan Wangji kept a strict, diurnal schedule and ate a vegetarian diet. Wen Chao was a night owl that lived off of steak and suishi. And yet they fit together somehow.
Wen Chao was practically purring as Lan Wangji’s fingernails scraped over his scalp. “We’re staying overnight at a hotel in town. What about you?”
“Same.”
“Do you want to share a room?” Wen Chao lifted his head just enough to look up and pout at Lan Wangji. “My roommate is Jin Zixun. Surely my beautiful and gracious boyfriend would spare me such a fate if he could.”
“Su She,” Lan Wangji replied with distaste.
Wen Chao growled, squeezing Lan Wangji even tighter. Lan Wangji tapped his arm in reproof. His boyfriend let him go with a kiss over his heart.
“Sorry, Bunny. How did that fink manage that?” Wen Chao glared ominously in the general direction of their student tour groups. “Doesn’t your teacher know Su She is practically your stalker?”
“Bribery,” Lan Wangji said, feeling a flood of relief. He’d been ignoring the upcoming situation.
“You were going to sleep in the hotel lobby or something ridiculous,” Wen Chao growled.
He tugged and Lan Wangji found himself settled firmly on Wen Chao’s legs instead of hovering over them. He stared at Wen Chao, eye-to-eye with his boyfriend, looking directly into those deep brown eyes. There were little flecks of gold, barely noticeable. He swallowed hard.
“Bathroom,” he admitted.
Wen Chao just stared at him. Lan Wangji felt like a rabbit in the claws of an eagle. Then the feeling faded and his warm, awkward and arrogant firebird was back.
“Well we aren’t having that,” Wen Chao said briskly. “Jin Zixun owes me. He’s Su She’s new roommate. You’re mine.”
“We said we’d wait.”
Wen Chao nodded, dropping a kiss on Lan Wangji’s nose. “Cuddles only. On my family’s name.”
Lan Wangji melted at that, allowing Wen Chao to hug him as tightly as he wanted. Suddenly he was looking forward to the end of the tour.
