"So," Bowser said, cracking his knuckles as he faced Mario across the roof of a large building that might have been the capitol of the Mushroom Kingdom if not for the steep drop-offs that surrounded it, "looks like I finally get to take you on hand to hand, Mario. No running underneath me and grabbing my axe, this time. No dirty tricks. Just you and me. That's the way it should've always been." He turned his head to one side, popping his neck and grinning. "If this is a dream, I hope I'm drooling on my pillow right now."
Mario realized that he had no place to go, no high ground to claim. Everything seemed ... wrong, like the Mushroom Kingdom, but not, rigged against him. For once, he had to rely on his own strength. He clenched his fists, took a second to straighten his hat. He had to admit that he wanted the same thing as Bowser. A fight. For real. To the finish.
"I'll be nice and not make fun of you," Bowser said, shifting his feet, dropping into a comfortable stance, "because I know you're not afraid. You're just seeing the lay of the land. That's fine. I wouldn't expect anything less of you." He laughed. "Learned that when you and I were on the same side. Don't think I wasn't on my guard then."
Mario replied, sighing, "We don't-a have to do this." Yes, he wanted to fight, but there had to be another way. He had taught himself to always be looking for another way.
"You know what? I think we do." Bowser nodded, smoke rising from his nostrils. "Back to basics, Mario. No go-karts. No playing sports. Especially golf." That made him gnash his teeth. "We've never settled it. Never. Every time you've dumped me into the lava, I've wanted to take a real shot at you, and today's the day. No interruptions. No sudden plot twists." He closed his eyes, inhaled, exhaled. "No Peach. Just you and me." And he snorted. "Almost wish old Kong was here to see it. He's got even more beef than I do."
"You leave-a that monkey out of this." Bowser had learned what buttons to push, and the long-running feud between Mario and his formet pet was one of the biggest. "He's-a not here. Just like-a you say: It's-a you, and it's-a me. That's-a all you need to know."
"Okay, maybe that was a little unfair," Bowser admitted, "but so is cutting the bridge and dumping my ass into the lava half a billion times. You owe me that one, Mario." Steam poured from between his teeth. "You owe me a lot. So what are you waiting for?"
Mario made up his mind. "The waiting is-a over."
And Bowser started running at him. "That's what I like to hear!"
It was time.
Time to Smash.
END.
