Summary: Jonas confesses his sins

AN: The way the confession goes is based on what I've read about it.

Hesitatingly Jonas closed the door of the confessional booth and sat onto the bench in it. He exhaled deeply as he leaned back and folded his hands.

The silence and darkness around him caused him to become unsure of whether it was a good idea to come here or not. Should he really confess his sins? Where they really sins since he had committed them in the name of the Lord? Hadn’t he always been kinda faithful, even most of it had been a show for the masses?

Unlike others, he knew the Bible inside out and there had always been a part of him, that had been a believer. Why was him making a fortune with what he knew and he could do best wrong? Why was that different from what quack doctors where doing? And if one squints their eyes and thinks about it a second time: Wasn’t it more dangerous what they were doing than his own work?

The priest greeted him, blessed him and read James 5:16.
Jonas noticed that the priest of the small town church had a pleasant voice: a voice made for telling the congregation the words of the Lord.

“… fervent prayer of a righteous man …”

Would he ever be the righteous man the Lord wants him to be? Could he wash off his sins and start anew? He wished with all of his heart, that the Lord would forgive him for profiting from the faith of thousands of people.

The priest waited for Jonas to speak now that he had the chance to confess everything. The burden which weighted heavily on his soul would be taken away from him. God would have mercy with him.

“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.” He skipped over the part where one would normally say the amount of time which had passed since their last confession. It was too long.

“I’ve never been a saint.”

Confused Jonas stopped talking. Was this really his own voice?
In a different life Jonas would have thought, that this was just the simple truth: He had always known that it was not how real priest act. Yet, at the very moment the whole weight of this truth and the lie he had lived with and believed dared to crush him.

He had been a liar, had pretended to be a real man of God until he had realized that this was only a half-truth. Thanks Rustwater.

“Father, I’ve exploited believers in the name of the Lord.”

Was the priest on the other side of the confession booth shocked? Jonas assumed that this would be the case, but he didn’t heard any shocked exhaling, something he was thankful for, since that would have have probably prevented him from continuing to speak.

He had spent weeks thinking about what he would say, if he would find the guts to confess his sins. Carefully he spook out the long prepared confession. Sure, here and there he changed it a bit. He was surprised that even it was a mentally challenging task to talk about his wrong way of living the life of a believer, he didn’t had much problems with speaking.

The darkness helped and the soothing prospect of stepping back into the light all cleaned from his sins, knowing that God still loved him and would remain by his side.
The black sheep would shed his wool and receive white one in exchange.
This time he would step into the light as a true believer and righteous preacher.

Once he had finished speaking, Jonas felt relieved and free of the heavy burden on his soul. In that moment he was glad, that he had decided to confess in a random church in some city in the country. The priest was a stranger to him and their paths would probably never cross again but it was right that way.

Attentively Jonas listed to the priest, who gave him advice for the future.

He knew what he would say as act of contrition. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and began to pray.

“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins ... ”

The regret came from the bottom of his heart, in this very moment he felt closer to God than he had felt in years. It was as if the Lord was with him in his part of the confession booth, watching him pray and being moved from how deeply he regretted his wrong doings from the past.

When Jonas opened his eyes after he had said “Amen”, he realized that he had shed some tears. Shocked from this subconsciously outburst of emotions he starred into the darkness of the confession booth.

From afar he heard the soft voice of the priest but most of the prayer passed his ears without the meaning of the words reaching his mind.

It was in the moment when he heard the priest speaking “… I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”, that Jonas snapped back to reality.

Relieved he exhaled, once more silent tears ran down his cheeks. He was free of sins.
He felt as if he had just been reborn.
After the priest had left his part of the confession booth Jonas remained where he was.

“Thank you, God.”

The inside of the church was too bright for his eyes, after the time in the darkness of the confession booth but it was nothing compared to the broad daylight which greeted him, when he stepped out of the church.

It was as if after a long night full of nightmares the new day was finally there, chasing the demons of the night away. His name meant ‘gift from God’ and he would live up to it, he would make sure to never let the darkness of the sin taint his soul ever again in life.

Hopefully Jonas will be a better man now, doing the lord's work without using it as a way to make himself rich.
