Summary: Natasha recruits an old friend to help with an information gathering mission.

“It’s not exactly rocket science.”

Tony stares skeptically at the woman in front of him. Natasha’s recommendation to get the people they need to help them is a movie star. A good movie star, don’t get him wrong. He’s enjoyed a few Allison Hargreeves flicks in his time, when he had the time to watch them. They make great background noise for whatever project he is working on. But bringing her in to convince the enemy to give them information by blending in as one of his minions—that she doesn’t strike him as viable for. He doesn’t care what kind of pet superhero program she went through as a child.

And then she had to say that of all things.

“This is rocket science, actually. It’s literally rocket science. I’m a rocket scientist.” Tony rests a hand on his hip. “What are you going to do, swan into the villain’s evil lair and say you’re looking to research a part?” He glances over to Steve, who’s been studying the entire conversation with the silence that means he has an opinion, but he’s keeping it to himself, though he seems a bit confused at the movie mention. “She’s an actress. A decent, B-level actress, but an actress all the same.”

Steve holds up a hand. “I don’t think Natasha would have recommended her if there wasn’t more to the story.” He then turns back to Allison. “What’s this Umbrella Academy again?”

“A publicity stunt. Some old cook adopted a bunch of children and claimed that he trained them to be heroes, letting them run around stopping bank robberies and museum heists. Not the level that we’re dealing with.”

“I believe he was asking me.” Allison crosses her arms in front of her chest. “And what that lovely but brief explanation left out is that all the children he adopted had superpowers.”

Steve points at her, as though to say there’s the kicker, before nodding. “So what’s yours?”

Allison smiles before turning to face Tony. If Tony had the common sense to be scared, which he doesn’t, most of the time, he might have realized that he’s in trouble. Instead, he meets her confident stare with an eyebrow raise of his own.

“I heard a rumor that you started doing the chicken dance.”

At first, nothing happens. But then, almost as though he can hear the music playing in a loop in his mind, Tony lifts his arms and goes through the motions, through no will of his own. His arms move up above his head in chirping motions, then into chicken wings, and by the time he’s getting ready to dosey-do around without a partner, he’s panicking.

“What the hell is going on?”

“You can stop.”

His arms drop and he’s in control of his body again, and now he has the common sense to be terrified of. He hates it when that happens.

“You can do that to anyone?” Steve asks, and Allison nods.

“In seven languages.”

“Never do that to me again,” Tony protests, and Allison doesn’t seem phased.

“Don’t be a dick to me and I won’t have to.” She then relaxes some. “So tell me what you need to get from the guy, and I’ll get it. And he won’t remember that we ever had the conversation.”

“Are you sure you want to risk this?” Steve asks. “You’re rather high profile, and if anyone sees you.”

“I know how to blend in when I need to.”

“How does Fury not know about you?” Tony would think that with powers like hers, they would have conscripted her into being a SHIELD agent a long time ago.

Allison shrugs. “He believes what you believe—that the Umbrella Academy was my father’s fantasy. And Natasha helped keep me under the radar.”

“Which is why you’re willing to help us now. You owe her.”

“Contextualize it however you need to. But I am here to help. So you might as well use me if you need me. And honestly, my powers are a last resort. I could probably get him to talk without using them.”

Steve glances over at Tony and shrugs. “It works for me. As long as we’re only getting information, not forcing him to do anything else.”

Tony already knows Natasha’s vote. In the end, he sighs. “Fine. But if any of you tell anyone about what happened here, just know that I will retaliate.”

Natasha slips her phone into her pocket, and he knows, just knows in his gut that Clint has already seen it. “You got it, boss. Should we get to planning the actual op now?”

Some days, Tony just can’t win.
