[#173] You’ve Got Nothing to Do and Even Less to Lose (Leverage)

Theme Prompt: #173 - Escape
Title: You’ve Got Nothing to Do and Even Less to Lose
Fandom: Leverage
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 721
Summary: Hardison finds himself in a sticky situation.

Hardison’s eyes scan over the room he’s currently trapped in, trying to gauge his potential means of escape. The computer in front of him could likely provide him with security codes, but no means of dealing with whatever guards are waiting for him outside. Trying to con his way out clearly didn’t work as well as he had hoped. Odds are Parker will pop through the vents, or Eliot is on his way to punch out the guards at the door and everything will be fine.

Everything will be fine.

But as the seconds tick on and he feels more and more unmoored without functioning comms (the mark crushed it, quite a waste of good technology). He’s in the middle of considering his options with possibly jumping out the window (he won’t, he’s not that stupid) when the door to the room opens, and Sophie appears on the other side. She tosses him a saucy wink before giving him her best:

“Come with me if you want to live.”

Hardison grins at her. “See, you understand the assignment.” It doesn’t take much for him to follow wherever Sophie leads. She passes him a new earbud, and he pops it in as he looks over the suspiciously empty hallways. “What’s the plan?”

“Eliot is creating a rather large distraction on the other side of the building with Parker’s help, and we are going to sneak out the back.”

“Sounds like a plan.” He follows fast on her heels as she leads him through a maze of hallways and same looking doors.

“Do you know how he caught on to you?” she asks as they make their way to the front.

“No,” he admits. “They had to have someone on the inside. But I can’t think of anyone who would—”

He’s been wracking his brains since he got caught, trying to figure out who would betray him this way. But as they round the corner, his eyes land on the only person it could be.

“—Kaos.”

“Hello, Hardison.” Hardison would like to punch that smug voice in its smug face. “You didn’t think I was going to let you escape that easily, did you?”

Sophie rolls her eyes. “Haven’t we done this already? You should know by now that you can’t win.”

“If you don’t test the code, you never know if you’ve improved it,” Kaos says calmly, reaching for his keyboard. “And I am a man who likes to set goals and achieve them.”

“I hate you so much,” Hardison responds, helpfully.

“Yes, well, you have no way out, so we’re just going to wait here until—”

Before he can finish that sentence, Sophie reaches out and pushes a button on her phone. His ranting villain monologue is cut short when he glances down at his tablet and finds:

“What did you do to the Wi-Fi?”

“See, that’s the problem with you tech folks. You’re only as good as your connection. And I’ve just severed yours.”

Kaos falters before shaking his head. “Any hacker worth their salt has a hotspot backup on their phone.”

“Mmmm, yes, but Hardison isn’t the only hacker we know. See, once his cover was blown, we knew it had to be personal, so we started tracking the whereabouts of known rivals. Didn’t take us long to figure out that you were in town, and that we saw you with the mark doing some dastardly plotting. So our hacker friend went and canceled that hotspot plan for you.” Sophie takes Hardison’s arm in one hand, before patting Kaos lightly on the shoulder as she passes him. “They did you a favor, really. They were gouging you on fees.”

Kaos’s impotent frustrations sound like music to Hardison’s ears as the two of them slip out the backdoor and into the safety of Lucille. Once Sophie gives the all clear, Eliot and Parker join them as they drive off into the sunset.

Once they’re a good ways away, and Eliot has his eyes focused on the road, he leans in to Sophie with a smile. “I know we usually call on Eliot in those situations, but I just want to say—you can come rescue me any day.”

Sophie smiles, before leaning in to kiss him on the cheek. “Anytime, Hardison. That’s what a team is for.”
