Summary: Shinri has no idea what is going on. He thought this was a run-of-the-mill paranormal investigation but it's turning into ... a party?
The doily-covered cork coaster slid across the coffee table so slowly, Josuiji Shinri was tempted to rub his eyes to make sure it wasn’t just some random blurriness. But he was afraid if he moved, it would stop altogether. So he didn’t even breathe.
On the coaster, the iced tea teetered ever so slightly. Shinri very distinctly heard the slosh of sugary beverage against the side of the can. A swishy sort of plop.
“Look who I found! They may have gotten here late but now it’s a real party!” Gavis Bettel sang out, reappearing with a pile of take-out and two men in tow.
That said, and without a single word of explanation, he promptly disappeared into the kitchen with his armload of takeout. He made no effort to make introductions or offer the newcomers drinks. Perhaps he already knew what they wanted?
Shinri guessed Bettel knew them and assumed Shinri knew both men as well. He didn’t. He wasn’t even sure if it was two men or a man and a boy?
The one man, he did know was Banzoin Hakka. Hakka was a well-known go-to guy in the amateur paranormal circuit. His wild, spiky purplish-black hair, khaki shorts, and dark-colored kimono tops (all featuring crows or ravens) were pretty distinctive.
The guy somehow managed to be anywhere there was an actual, serious problem. He was the only paranormal investigator who wore flip-flops and carried an actual, genuine spear. And knew how to use it. And had actually used it, on more than one occasion.
Shinri didn’t know what to make of the guy, but he liked and respected him. If nothing else, Hakka was devoted to his family and community. When he wasn’t springing amateur ghost hunters out of their own spirit traps, he was always volunteering his time somewhere around town or cooking for his family.
The other fellow, that was a mystery. His hair was short, like, middle-schooler short with a baby face to match. With short hair that was red on top and black underneath. It didn’t appear to be dyed but Shinri had no idea how that sort of hair would appear naturally. This person sported a black body suit that covered everything from wrist to knee, over which he wore red shorts that were just a bit shorter, a red mesh tank top, a red aviator jacket, and red sneakers with odd claw-like protrusions from the toes.
“Hello?” Shinri offered, with a smile. “I’m Josuiji Shinri. Pleased to meet you.”
“Oooooooooh,” the unknown, very short person said. “You’re Josuiji Shinri. I see, I see. I’ve only ever heard your voice before. I see, I see. Wow, you really do match your voice. Can you guess who I am? Huh? Can you? Hmmmmmmmm?”
“Uh?” Shinri had been in the process of standing up, preparing to extend his hand to shake. But at this he just dropped back down on the couch, blinking at the newcomer, who was rocking back and forth on his heels like a little kid.
“Don’t tease, Machi,” Banzoin Hakka said, tilting to one side in order to nudge his shoulder against the shorter fellow’s. Then he crossed the room to sit beside Shinri. “Don’t let his looks fool you. You know his reputation. Good to see you man, long time.”
Shinri accepted the handshake and side-hug. “Good to see you too. I hear you had a birthday recently. Happy birthday, man.”
“Ah, thank you, thank you,” Hakka smiled at him, obviously preening. Further emphasized by three tufts of hair on his head standing up like feathers. “Come over some time. My mama and I cooked up a feast. There are still leftovers if you want to help us eat them.”
Shinri’s stomach grumbled at the mere thought of Hakka’s cooking. “I will be there,” he promised.
“No fair, no fair!” The other newcomer stomped his foot. “You didn’t answer my question!”
“I apologize.” Shinri offered regretfully. “I’m afraid I don’t recognize you at all.”
“Huh.” The kid plopped down on the couch Bettel had vacated and crossed his arms in a pout. “Hakka says you’re the real deal but you can’t be that great if you don’t know who I am. Not in a city this small.”
“Josuiji Shinri, may I present to you the one, the only, the best pilot, the genius with any and all machinus, Machina X Flayon,” Hakka said, his voice and gestures making a small production out of the introduction. “This is the guy who solved the problem with the pigeons haunting that old academy. And the guy who pieced together how those 13 figures were related.”
“Whoa!” Shinri couldn’t believe the answer to two of the city’s biggest paranormal mysteries was this little kid sitting right in front of him. “Impressive work!”
“Thank you,” Machina X Flayon replied, with a smug smile, instantly appeased. “Next we’re going to solve Bettel-bear’s problem. Did he ask you to come, too? With three of us, it should be easy! Since we’ll be working together, you can call me Machi, too, okay Shinri?”
Shinri blushed, feeling distinctly outclassed. He was just an amateur! He did this in his spare time. Before he could say that, Bettel returned with a huge platter loaded with bowls of food.
“Dinner’s on!” He announced, slapping the platter down in the center of the coffee table.
Hakka saved the drinks just in time. Shinri accepted his and Bettel took his own as he sat down and passed out chopsticks. Two more cans of Brisk sat on the tray. As if they’d done this before, Machi and Hakka cracked open their cans and took a sip.
Shinri watched, utterly confused. This wasn’t what had been mentioned in the ad at all. Was he at the wrong house, after all? If that was the case, then what was going on with the coaster?
He opened his mouth to ask as the table began to shake.
"I think we're out of time," Hakka said, announced.
For anyone interested in the vtubers mentioned ... I'm including links to their debut streams. Each one is about an hour long. They are NOT kid-friendly, as a rule.
