Word Count: 1,000
Summary: Jiang Cheng catches his boyfriend cheating. The Nies come to his rescue.
It wasn’t unusual for Jiang Cheng’s life to take a drastic turn for the unexpectedly horrible. Every five years or so, like clockwork, his heart was shattered anew. Each time hurt just as much as the first time.
Each time hurt just as much as the day he’d come home from his first day of kindergarten, frantic to see his puppies only to find them gone. In their place, in his room, was a hollow-eyed boy hugging the stuffed tiger Jiang Cheng’s Yu Popo had made for him at his birth. It had been because of that boy. Jiang Cheng's mother had been so mad when she'd seen that.
He'd refused to go to kindergarten, not wanting to be parted from his beloved puppies. His parents and his sister had assured him so many times that his puppies would be there when he came home. They’d promised him. So he’d gone.
They'd lied. Instead there had been that boy. And a baby Jiang Cheng getting scolded for crying over 'some stupid puppies'. It hadn’t mattered that his mother and father and jiejie had promised his puppies would be waiting safe at home.
In the end, what he wanted never mattered. Promises made to him never counted.
So even as his heart shattered into a million pieces in his chest, yet again, he merely put his briefcase on the kitchen counter. He pulled a pint of ice cream out of the freezer. Then he fetched a spoon and hopped up on the counter beside his briefcase. And waited.
This was a Wei Wuxian move, sitting on the counter. But who was counting? He still had his earbud for his phone in so he called Nie Huaisang while eating. The raucous noise from the bedroom would be heard over the call, no doubt, but oh well. What could he do?
“Jiang Cheng?” Nie Huaisang sounded surprised. “Weren’t you going on a date with Wei Wuxian tonight?”
“Mm-hm.” Jiang Cheng let ice cream melt on his tongue. A particularly loud set of screeches and shouts filled the apartment. The rhythmic pounding of the headboard into the wall provided a steady staccato backdrop to the ululating wails.
There was outrage in his voice when Nie Huaisang asked, “What is that noise?”
Before Jiang Cheng could answer, the wailing ended and Wei Wuxian began shouting. “Lan-er-gege! Right there! Fill me up! I want your babies!”
“So hey,” Jiang Cheng said, surprised at how normal he sounded. “Can I come stay with you for awhile? Just until I can find a place of my own. A month, max.”
“Jiang Cheng, of course,” Nie Huaisang said, his voice muffled. “I’m on my way.”
“What? Why?”
“I need to kill Wei-xiong,” Nie Huaisang explained. “Don’t worry. I’m bringing Da-ge. He’ll help me hide the body.”
Jiang Cheng wanted to laugh but didn’t dare because he would start to cry. “Please tell me you aren’t actually going to kill him, Huaisang. You would look terrible in prison clothes.”
A pause. “For you, it would be worth it.”
He couldn’t hold back tears anymore. Jiang Cheng sniffled into his ice cream. “That is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.”
“The fact that you’re serious is really sad,” Nie Huaisang replied. “Do you want me to stay on the line with you until we get there?”
“Please. Can you bring some of my pills? I’m eating my way through a pint of ice cream right now.”
A familiar sigh. “Jiang Cheng, you know the pills work better if you take them before dairy torture, right?”
He sniffled. “Logic. We don’t know her.”
The bedroom door opened. Lan Wangji strode into the kitchen. He was completely naked; covered in various fluids, marks, and still at half-mast. He came to a dead stop, going paler than a ghost when he saw his audience. Jiang Cheng waved.
“Don’t mind me,” he said. “Although if you could move it into the guest room so I can clean out my half of the closet and my half of the dresser, that would be great. Hey, so much for all those rules and all that personal integrity you Lans are supposed to live by, huh?”
“Oh that rotten bitch,” Nie Huaisang hissed in his ear. “Does he look smug or upset, Jiang Cheng?”
Jiang Cheng shoved another spoonful of ice cream in his mouth and didn't answer. He wasn't sure what Huaisang would do with the information. Lan Wangji stood frozen on the kitchen threshold for one minute. Two.
“Lan-er-gege, what’s taking you so long?” Wei Wuxian called out in a coy, teasing sing-song. “I’m getting lonely without you.”
Lan Wangji came to life like a robot with fresh batteries. He strode to the fridge, retrieved two bottles of water, and went back the way he’d come without an ounce of shame. Jiang Cheng couldn’t restrain a flinch when the bedroom door slammed.
A few minutes later, after sounds of frantic scrambling, Wei Wuxian came out wearing a sheet. He stared at Jiang Cheng with heartbreak on his face. Just as Nie Huaisang came in with the spare key. His older brother, Nie Mingjue, followed behind with an armload of boxes.
Jiang Cheng set the ice cream aside and hopped off the counter. “I’ll just get my things and we’ll go,” he said. “Don’t mind us.”
“Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian whimpered, reaching for him with the arm that wasn’t holding up his sheet. “Please. I can explain.”
Jiang Cheng shook his head. “You gave your word,” he said. “Then broke it. What is there to explain? We’re done.”
He walked past Wei Wuxian, into the bedroom. Lan Wangji, for some reason, was making the bed. Without the sheet. Jiang Cheng ignored him and began pulling open his drawers. He opened his half of the closet. The look of shock on Lan Wangji’s face when all of his signature purple clothing was revealed was poor comfort.
There wasn’t time to care. He had to pack.
