Summary: Jim and Blair are trying to piece together a murder mystery.

Jim and Blair were at the loft, trying to relax a little before they got the files out again to try and figure out where to go in this investigation. Both men were tired and hungry.

Blair stood up and said, “I’m going to make dinner. You are going to ask me questions about the murder, while I cook.”

Blair busied himself with browning the hamburger and draining it while Jim was still reading the file. Blair started building his Mexican Goulash and almost laughed about the name, but didn’t because there was nothing but serious talk right now. “So, Jim, tell me what you think.”

“It all points to the son that’s in college. I think someone went out of their way to make it look like it was the son. But meeting him and questioning him, I’m almost certain it’s not him. He wasn’t lying, Chief. You know that I can usually tell. He’s very upset, but not guilty at all. What do you think?”

“There is a lot of money involved, so who would get the money?” Blair asked.

“The son of course, but if he murdered his parents and siblings, the money would go to the victim’s brother and sister. I don’t know what I think about them yet.”

“I don’t like them, Jim. Not at all.”

“You have to have a reason for not liking them, Blair. Think of some good reasons.”

“Do they have money problems?” Blair wondered.

“The sister of the victim owes about $85,000.00 and the brother owes even more. But not enough to kill someone.”

“Do they have homes? Do they own cars?” Blair asked.

“Neither of them own a home. They live together, in fact. Which is almost odd to me.”

“Jim, maybe they did it together. They are each other’s alibi. We need to check their alibis right away. I bet something comes up. What is their alibi?”

“They said they were at Sullivan’s Steak House all evening having dinner. Blair, let’s check that out again. See if we can find out something that makes sense.”

“I think it’s like putting a puzzle together. And we have all the puzzle pieces, we just have to put them all together. Once that’s done, we’ll have our killer or killers.”

Jim called the restaurant again and talked to the manager. He faxed him a picture of the two people he was asking about and the manager said, “I waited on them. They were only here for about 30 minutes. They got called away and never came back. They weren’t here all night. That’s for sure. They insisted that they pay for the dinner, even though they weren’t there.”

“Thank you so much,” Jim said. “I think we have a winner. Let’s forget about dinner and go and question them once again. This investigation just took off in another direction. Put everything in the fridge. We’ll eat when we get home.”

“They’ll have other excuses, I’m sure,” Blair said.

“And we’ll catch them again. Brown and Rafe didn’t talk to the manager about the couple so that’s why it got passed over. I’m so glad to see that we’re getting somewhere.”

“Jesus, Jim. I can’t believe they killed the whole family and blamed their nephew. Now it’s up to us to make this work.”

The two men left with a new spring in their step. Things might work out for the victim’s son. If Blair and Jim had anything to do with it, they would find this out tonight.
