Summary: Rafe has been hurt on the job and turns to pain killers for his answer to pain.

Rafe was due to come back to the station in two weeks. He had been shot in his knee and they had to replace his knee and he was finally able to start back in the bullpen. He would start out with two weeks on desk duty, but it was better than being at home, alone.

Brown walked up to Jim and Blair and said, “Could I go to lunch with you today?”

Blair didn’t even pause and said, “Sure, is something up?”

“I think so. I need help with dealing with something. I’m hoping you can help me decide what to do.”

The three of them left for lunch and didn’t talk till they were sitting in the booth across the street from the station. All three of them ordered the meatloaf. It was to die for.

Once they had their drinks, Jim said, “Now, tell us what’s bothering you, Henri.”

“I think Rafe is on pain killers to cope with his knee. He’s loopy every time I go and visit him, but his doctor told him no more drugs and yet, he’s high every time I see him. I don’t know what to do about it.”

“Henri, if you witnessed this, you have to talk to Simon. He’ll need to be free of pain killers before he comes back. I know he was in a lot of pain, but he’s got to kick this, or his job won’t be there for him. He probably needs to go to rehab,” Jim stated.

Blair was thinking about all this and said, “I think you should bring him over to the loft and we can see what you’re talking about.”

“I’m hoping I’m wrong, Jim and Blair. But I think he’s using. He used very poor judgement after he came home from the hospital. I have no idea where he’s getting the drugs from.”

“Can you bring him over tonight?” Jim asked.

“Yeah, we’ll just pop in. I’ll tell him you wanted to see him before he goes back.”

“Good, now stop worrying, Henri, until he refuses to go along with what we say. If he does, we have to tell Simon,” Blair said.

They ate their lunch and went back to the station to finish for the day.

That night, Jim opened the door when he heard the knock. “Hi, guys, come on in. Who would like a beer?” Jim asked.

“I could use one, Jim. Thank you,” Rafe answered. He was slurring his words and was higher than a kite. Jim sighed, got Henri and Rafe a beer and then they all sat down in the living room.

As they sat and talked, Jim watched Rafe like a hawk. Finally, Jim said, “Rafe, you do know that you can’t come back to work while using pain medication, right?”

“What are you talking about? I’m not taking anything…”

Henri just sat there and waited for the ax to fall.

Blair said, “Rafe, if anyone knows you’re on pain killers, it would be Jim. When did you start and how many a day do you take?”

“I’m able to do what I need to do. Stop pushing me around. In fact, I’m leaving.” Rafe stood up and Jim did too.

“Rafe, you have to go into rehab right away, or you won’t be coming back to the bullpen. We have to tell Simon.”

Rafe got big tears in his eyes and said, “It happened before I knew it. I have to keep using more and more every day. I didn’t know what else to do. I couldn’t stand the pain. I thought it was in my best interest, or I wouldn’t have taken them at all.”

Blair sat next to Rafe and rubbed Rafe’s back as Blair said, “Everything is going to be all right, Rafe. You’ll be good to go back to work within two weeks. You used poor judgement in taking pills after the doctor stopped giving them to you. But now, you can stop this and get off pills all together.”

“Blair, do you know how I would get into this?” Rafe asked.

“Come with me into my office and I’ll help you get set up as soon as possible. As long as you’re clean, there is no reason to not come back to work. You have to work the program after you get out too. Once an addict, always an addict. Can you do that, Rafe?”

“I have no choice, Blair. I need my job, my friends and my life back to normal. Thank you for caring enough about me to help.”

Blair stood up and said, “Come with me and we’ll get you started. Henri and Jim, you just sit and talk to each other while we take care of business.”

“Yes, boss,” Jim answered, smiling for the first time since Rafe had gotten there.

“I’ll be waiting for you, partner,” Henri said, as casually as he could.

Jim and Henri both knew that Rafe was going to have some rough days ahead. But they hoped rehab would be good for him. And Henri would go to the meetings with Rafe at the start. After all, he wasn’t just Rafe’s partner, he was Henri’s best friend.

All four of the men knew this was going to be hard. But at least Rafe was using good judgement this time, instead of bad.
