[#188] Say the Word and I'm Already There (TVD/Teen Wolf)
Theme Prompt: #188 - Partners
Title: Say the Word and I’m Already There
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries/Teen Wolf
Rating/Warnings: PG-13
Bonus: Yes.
Word Count: 912
Summary: Derek moves to a new school after the fire and makes a new friend.
Caroline Forbes is not what he expected. Mostly because he’s never met someone this cheery in his life.
Derek arrives at the entrance to Mystic Falls High School, dreading the implications of what’s coming. He has one year left of high school and could pass his GED, but Laura thinks he needs to be occupied. Mystic Falls is too small for a high school-aged teen to not be in high school without attracting attention.
For not the first time, he wishes they had gone somewhere more crowded, like DC or New York. But Laura has theoretical allies here, and she insists on him playing along. He has absolutely no fucks to give with managing tiny high school problems. But that’s until he met Caroline, and she bursts into his depressed gloom like the sun personified.
To most people, it would probably be a lot. For Derek, it would probably be a lot. But it isn’t. It’s a relief to be treated like there’s nothing wrong with him, even if he can’t muster up the energy to actually pretend for himself. She invites him to a party at the Falls, but he feels out of place with the other kids. She comes over with a beer and sighs.
“So in the interest of full disclosure, I googled you.”
Derek raises an eyebrow. “You what?”
“Googled you? Like the search engine.” She seems apologetic once he realizes. “You seemed really out of sorts, and I’m a little nosy.”
“So you know about the …”
“Fire. Yeah.” She swallows hard. “Look, I’m not good at the whole comforting thing—that’s more Elena’s deal than mine. So I’m just going to keep going, pretending like I know nothing, but I’m here. If you want to talk about it. I’m not sure if it actually helps.”
Derek nods, because that sounds fair enough. “Honestly? It kinda does.”
She seems to brighten at that, that she’s done something right, and nods. “Well, I’ll have your back if you’ll have mine.”
“Are you sure about that?” He asks curiously.
“What, like it’s hard?” She smirks. “Now, come on. There’s some people I want to introduce you to.”
He doesn’t really want to meet more people, but this is what it means to be normal. And while he’s here, he needs to try.

Derek learns two things over the course of the next few weeks. One, this town is a duplicate Beacon Hills, a small town more embroiled in the supernatural. Two, Derek really doesn’t like Caroline’s boyfriend. It’s not because he’s a vampire. Derek can handle a vampire as long as they aren’t dicks. Damon Salvatore is a dick.
He reminds Derek of Kate.
Derek doesn’t like how Caroline constantly smells like blood or seems like she’s in pain. She’s blowing off plans or forgetting things. Her responses sound canned and hollow, as though that’s what someone’s told her to say. He doesn’t know what to do about it. Laura says that just slipping her vervain could be dangerous if Damon is abusing her like Derek thinks he is, but he can’t just do nothing. So he tries to take the direct approach. He catches Caroline as she’s coming out of school and takes her by the arm.
“We need to talk.”
Caroline blinks. “Damon’s waiting for me…”
“Yeah, it’s about him.”
Caroline frowns and as they get far out enough, he stops. “What do you mean?”
Derek takes a deep breath. “Damon’s a bad guy. And the world isn’t what you think it is.” He pauses. “Honestly, I’m not who you think I am, but he’s hurting you.”
“What?” Caroline yanks her hand away. “No, he’s not.”
“I’ve seen the bite marks on your back, Caroline. On your neck? He’s a vampire, and he’s feeding on you.”
Caroline blinks. “How do you know this?”
“Because I’m supernatural too. I’m a werewolf.”
“Whoa. Damon said werewolves aren’t real.”
“Well, Damon is clearly an idiot.” Derek frowns as he takes a step closer. “He’s hurting you, Caroline. And that’s not okay.”
There’s a moment where she seems like she’s having a fight with herself, almost as though she’s fighting against the compulsion. “I don’t … I can’t.”
“I can give you something, to protect you.” He holds out the woven vervain bracelet and places it on her arm. “It won’t overpower him, or give you anything back, but he won’t be able to give you any new commands. But you have to be careful, Caroline. If he figures it out, he could really hurt you.”
Caroline swallows and looks back over her shoulder. “He’s waiting for me. I should go.”
“I can give you a reason to ditch him.”
“That would only give him a reason to hurt you.”
She’s not wrong. But he doesn’t like the idea of leaving her alone. “Fine. But—”
“I know.” She slips the bracelet around her wrist. “Be careful.”

Later that evening, someone knocks at the front door of the apartment he’s sharing with Laura. Laura gets to the door first, and when she opens it, Caroline is a mess, bloody and crying, but she tries to summon a brave face while Laura is looking at her.
“Hi. Is—”
“Derek!” Laura turns to face him as he pokes his head out of the hallway. “What did you do?”
Derek takes a deep breath, before stepping forward and pulling Caroline inside. “I helped her.”
