Summary: Jim and Blair come across a murder that seems very familiar to Jim.
Jim Ellison and Blair Sandburg were out at a crime scene. Blair saw an odd look on Jim’s face and asked in a whispered tone, “Jim, what’s wrong? What did you find?”
“I found a murder that looks exactly like a murder from 8 years ago. If I hadn’t put the guy away for the murder, I would say it was him. But he’s in prison.”
“Wow! At least we have somewhere to start, right? We’ll check out his family to see if anyone would do this in hopes that he’d get off and out of prison.”
“That’s what we’re going to do.”
They started asking people questions that had to do with the woman that was killed. They had to remember that it could have been someone not familiar with the murder from 8 years ago. They found little clues but nothing big. So, Jim decided they would check out the family of the man in prison.
They got back to the bullpen and Blair worked on his computer, while Jim worked on his. They would compare notes when they were done.
An hour later, Jim said, “He doesn’t have a brother. I thought maybe that’s who it would be but no brother.”
Blair said, “But he has a sister and his dad. Maybe it was his dad. I doubt that his sister had anything to do with it.”
“Why do you say that, Chief?”
“Because why would his sister kill someone for him? It doesn’t make sense.”
“Let’s go ask some questions. It can’t hurt to ask.” Jim got up and put his shoulder holster on and both men got their jackets on and went down to the parking garage.
Once they got to the dad’s residence, Jim said, “Let me do the talking, Blair. Unless you notice something, I’m missing. By all means, speak up then.”
“Okay, I’ll just observe and see if I notice anything strange.”
Jim knocked on the door and a young woman answered. “May I help you?”
Blair noticed that she looked very sweet. “I’m Detective Jim Ellison and this is Consultant Blair Sandburg, we have questions to ask of your father.”
“My father is on Hospice and is very ill.”
“I need to talk to him, please?” Jim wasn’t going to back down.
She nodded her head and said, “Follow me.”
They followed her into the bedroom and saw him with a nurse. The nurse turned to them and said, “What are you doing in here? Who are you? This man is dying. He’s only going to be with us a short time. I don’t want him upset.”
“My name is Detective Ellison. If he wanted to go somewhere, can he leave the house?”
She looked at Jim as if he had two heads. “He’s in a coma. He couldn’t leave if he wanted to.”
Blair asked, “Are you certain?”
“Yes, I’m certain. He’s dying. He’s been in a coma for about six days. I wish for you to leave now. Go question someone that can move.”
Jim walked over to the door and motioned Blair to follow. The sister named, Molly, walked them to the front door.
Blair asked, “What were you doing last night at 7:00 p.m.”
She was thrown for a loop. She never expected to have any questions asked. She suddenly became nervous and tongue tied.
“How dare you. Get out of my home.”
“You’ll need to answer the question right now,” Jim replied.
“I was here. I never left his side.”
“Were you alone?” Blair asked.
“No, the nurse was here. You can ask her, if she saw me here.”
“We’ll do that right now. Sandburg, you stay with Miss Wilson.” Jim walked back into the room with the nurse and said, “I need to know if you saw Molly Wilson last night, all night long.”
“I saw her at 6:00 but then she went up to her room to rest for two hours. She came back down at about 8:15. I never heard a peep out of her for those two hours.”
Jim walked out of the room and saw Blair standing with Molly and Molly knew that the nurse didn’t see her at the time. She knew her goose was cooked.
“Molly Wilson, you’re under arrest for the murder of Beth Kinney.” Jim then read her rights to her and put the cuffs on her.
She looked over at Jim and said, “We’re not so different.”
Jim looked at her oddly and said, “You and me?”
“No, I meant me and my brother. I helped him the last time. He was teaching me how to do it properly. He learned from my dad. It was like a family business.”
Blair realized that this poor girl was nuts. She would no doubt go to Conover.
They took her to the station where they asked questions all night. She gave her statement and seemed pleased that she had killed that woman. She had lost total touch with reality.
They took her downstairs and printed her and got everything ready to send to jail for now. A psychiatrist would see her before she went before a judge.
Jim and Blair went back up and typed their reports and got it all filed and a copy on Simon’s desk. They had never solved a case this fast. It was all Jim’s memory that came into play. If he hadn’t remembered that murder, they would have had no idea, it was the sister.
Jim and Blair left for the night, drove to Brad’s Pub for a sandwich and a beer. Both men were thrilled that they were already done for the night. They clinked their beer bottles together and Blair said, “This was a good night, Jim.”
“Yes, it was. Thanks for the help, Chief.”
