Summary: Jim hesitated and missed his moment of opportunity. Is all lost?
Jim got up that morning, with one thing on his mind and that was Blair. Today, he was going to get the courage up to ask Blair out on a date. There were two cops in traffic that wanted to ask Blair out and Jim knew he had to make his mind up and do something right now. The only reason he knew about it was because Megan Connor had told him about the two cops in traffic and she knew Jim had his eye on Blair for some time. She explained, he was going to lose Blair, if he didn’t act and fast. So, Jim Ellison was going to do it today if it killed him.
Blair had taken his own car in early to catch up with some things with Henri Brown and Brian Rafe. It was something that Blair wanted to get out of the way. Then he could focus on the two men in traffic that asked him out the day before. All Blair could think of was how mad Jim would be if he dated a cop. But at the same time, who was he going to date if not someone he met through work. Blair had some thinking to do, that was for sure.
When Jim arrived at the station, Megan Connor was waiting for him. She whispered, Sentinel soft, “They asked him out yesterday, Jimbo. It’s time to make your move.”
“He didn’t say a word to me about it. Maybe, I should let him decide, Megan. Maybe he doesn’t find me attractive.”
“Oh, give me a break. He watches you all the time. He’s interested. Ask him out today. This is your chance.”
“Where is he, anyhow?”
“I don’t know. Listen for him,” Megan suggested.
Jim cocked his head and listened and knew he was talking to one of the guys that asked him out.
“Sandburg, is it yes, or no? It’s not that difficult a question. Do you want to go out tonight or not?” The cop almost sounded like an asshole and Jim hoped Blair would see that.
“Well, since you put it that way, go fuck yourself, Miller. I didn’t want to date you anyhow.”
Jim smiled and told Megan, “He just turned the first guy down for being an asshole.”
“The time is now. Go find him and ask him out. Before the 2nd guy asks him, again.” Megan was quite bossy when it came to Jim and Blair.
“I’ll ask him as soon as he comes up, Megan. That’ll be my time to ask him.” Jim sat down at his desk and smiled.
Megan was pissed. She wanted Jim and Blair to be together. But Jim was stubborn. She would just have to hope that things would work out okay.
Blair came up to the bullpen about 15 minutes later and was smiling like crazy. He stopped at Megan’s desk and said, “Guess who just asked me out?”
“Who?” she asked.
“Officer Tom Benson. He’s so fucking cute, don’t you think?”
“He’s darling… Now what did you say?”
“I told him I would give him my answer tonight when I got off. This is good, right?”
Blair glanced over at Jim and said, “Oh, oh. Jim looks mad.”
“Better go see what he wants, Sandy.”
Blair sat down at his desk and said, “What’s wrong?”
“I guess I’m the only one working today,” Jim growled.
“Oh, settle down. I’m here now. Give me half your stack of reports and I’ll get them done quick like.”
Megan was trying to get Jim’s attention and finally did. She whispered, “Now, do it now.”
Jim thought he had hesitated enough before that, so he was going to do it. Jim said, “Chief, can I talk to you in the break room?”
“Sure, you can talk to me anytime.”
They walked back there and Jim was hopeful, or at least hoping he had a chance. He shut the door behind Blair and said, “How would you like to go to dinner tonight? As in a date?”
Blair just looked at him oddly and said, “Are you serious?”
“Yes, serious.”
“I would love to. I got asked out today by someone else and I really didn’t want to, because you’re my type and all.”
“I’m your type?”
“Of course. Tall, built like a Greek God and perfection radiating off of you.”
“You’re going to get so lucky, Chief.”
“Good, I’m glad. Thanks, for asking.”
“This is going to be fun.”
And they both knew it would be.
