Summary: Marcus tells a lie for his mother

Marcus’ mother had been the spiritual guide on the the Ark for as long as Marcus could remember. When he was young, he attended every meeting, closing the ceremony each time with the ritual watering of the tree. The church was so important to his mother, it was natural for him to accept it as part of his life, as well, though he always showed up more to make her happy than because of any deep-seated belief of his own.

In adolescence, it was equally as natural for Marcus to rebel against his mother’s doctrines, seeking his own truth in the echoing corridors of the spinning space station. His mother never railed at his teenage recalcitrance. She merely looked at him with sorrow in her eyes, and told him he would always be welcome back at church meetings, whenever he was ready.

When he became a cadet, then a guardsman, and eventually a member of the council, Marcus was mostly too busy to think about his spiritual well-being. The distance between him and his mother grew, until they barely saw one another. He occasionally walked in on a gathering of his mother’s followers, and always felt bad about the hope that immediately sprang into her eyes upon seeing him. But he had more important things to worry about. And, besides, by then he was firm in his belief that only the efforts of the people on the Ark would maintain their existence and lead to their eventual return to the Earth. There was no higher power, watching over them and preparing their ancient home for their journey back.

Then came the oxygen crisis and the sacrifice of the three hundred and twenty people in Section 17. The culling was Marcus’ plan, and he had been so sure it was the right choice. But then the radio confirmation came from the ground that the one hundred were still alive, and everything suddenly fell apart. Marcus had been so certain he knew what he was doing, and hundreds of people had died for no reason. He sought out comfort at the tree, but actually found it in the arms of his mother, who loved him, no matter what.

Now, after the bomb on Unity Day, Marcus crouched over his mother and looked into her eyes as she lay, dying. They radiated pain and fear, and he realised he would do anything to ease her suffering. He spoke the words he had known from childhood.

"In peace, may you leave the shore. In love, may you find the next. Safe passage on your travels until our final journey to the ground. May we meet again."

His mother’s expression cleared and she gazed up at him with pride and gratitude. And then she was gone. Marcus leaned over her in despair, wishing he could feel the truth of the words in his heart. But there was only the lie.

I'M BAWLING

I just picked up this series, and I only finished the 1st season, but gosh darn it Marcus grew on me and I especially loved that scene and I wholeheartedly believe in your interpretation of it.

Because it's so true, it's painful.

Thank you for this.

Heartbreaking. Even though I don't know the fandom, you sketch out the characters so neatly that I feel for them. Marcus gave his mother the only gift he could at the end and she'll never know it was a lie, but Marcus will have to live with that knowledge.
