Summary: In which Optimus loses his temper.

“Prowl.”

Optimus set his jaw behind his battle mask, narrowing his optics over the holographic projections on the war table.

“This is it, Prime,” Prowl continued, heedless of his superior officer’s objections, as he pointed at the shape of a massive vessel, the size of a small moon, in a rapidly decaying orbit.

It was falling directly towards their home… with no hope of it burning up on reentry.

Optimus’s spark went slow and cold in his chest, a sphere of ice as his optics followed the arc of the warworld’s imminent descent. Right into the great basin of the Rust Sea.

Whatever wasn’t destroyed by the impact itself… would be drowned by the resulting tidal wave or the disrupted volcanism. In a blink, Cybertron would be rendered uninhabitable for millions of years to come.

Everything. Annihilated.

This is what we’ve been waiting for. The Decepticons are stranded on the surface and when that disabled warworld makes impact—“

Prowl.

Optimus liked to think he didn’t tend to lose his temper, liked to think of himself as rational and collected. Whether or not that was true rather than merely a comforting illusion…. It didn’t matter right now.

“The enemy contingent here will be wiped out instantaneously—“

Prowl!

Optimus slammed his fist down on the edge of the table, the projections destabilizing with a worrisome buzz.

“You didn’t once consult me about this plan.”

Not only would that not end the war—there were other enemies elsewhere… and Megatron wasn’t even confirmed to be planetside—it would be at a tremendous cost to their planet.

“But, Prime—“

“We’re destroying our world! The very thing we set out to save from tyranny!” He brought down his fist again, the table rattling as the projector struggled. The projector’s base began to throw off sparks, arcing and smoking where components were damaged. “This is akin to ‘saving’ a hostage by shooting them point blank through the spark!”

The others around the table—both members of High Command and those other operatives essential to the mission—began to back away.

A wise decision.

Optimus, however, stubbornly stayed in his seat. He would fully accept the consequences of his actions, unlike Prowl… who had acted without Optimus’s approval, behind his back.

“We’re about to achieve a tremendous victory we don’t want!”

The projector exploded upward towards the ceiling, a flash of blinding light as it finally failed.
