[#001] The Lost Princess (Tangled)

Theme Prompt: New Beginnings
Title: The Lost Princess
Fandom: Disney's Tangled
Rating/Warnings: Spoilers for the end of Tangled, if that's a thing that can be spoiled?
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 748
Summary: Rapunzel takes a moment to consider how much her life has changed.

It happens on the first of the month. She’s almost started to get used to her new routine (there’s something uniquely liberating about not having to spend hours brushing her hair every morning), and while she’s still an early riser, she uses the time to wander in the garden, now, rather than daydreaming about what her life could be.

She’s lived in the palace long enough that it shouldn’t be a shock when she wakes up with chin-length hair, far away from her tower, but this morning it is. She wakes up with a jolt and for a few brief, heartstopping moments, she’s forgotten where she is, who she is, and what happened to her hair.

And then she remembers.

She remembers the horrible scene with Mother (not her mother--not much of a mother at all, as it turned out), finding out who she is, and almost losing Eugene, and she’s suddenly restless. She can’t stay in bed anymore, even though it’s still not light out.

She throws off the covers and climbs out of bed, shivering a little at the breeze on her neck that feels too unnatural right now. She’s not wearing shoes, but she goes outside anyway. It’s early enough that there won’t be anyone to see and comment on how odd it is that the princess is walking in the garden with no shoes. Not so odd, when you consider that she’d spent the first eighteen years of her life without them, but they don’t really think of that. No one really wants to think about that, but right now, Rapunzel can’t help it.

She sits down and pulls her feet up under her skirt, looking up. It’s still a little amazing to her that she can go outside and look up to see the whole sky, rather than the little pieces of it she’d pieced together from her tower windows. Like the rest of the world, it’s bigger than she had imagined.

There’s a quiet noise, but Rapunzel is less skittish than she used to be, and she doesn’t flinch like she did before. Someone settles on the bench beside her, and she turns to see her mother--her real mother--sitting there, looking up at the sky too.

She doesn’t turn, but continues to look at the sky. “I used to wonder about you,” she says quietly. “What you were doing. If you were looking up at the sky too, and wondering about us. I never imagined…” Her voice trails off, and she does turn now, to give Rapunzel a sad little smile. “I don’t think any of us could have imagined the truth. Couldn’t sleep?”

The non-sequitur makes Rapunzel blink in surprise, but she gives her an uncertain smile of her own in return. “You either? What time is it?”

“It’s more late than early,” her mother admits. She turns toward her, pulling her own feet up and looking back at Rapunzel. She looks like she still expects her to disappear.

Sometimes Rapunzel still feels like she’s going to disappear, too.

“...I forgot where I was,” she admits finally. “It hasn’t happened in a while, but it did and then I couldn’t sleep…”

“It’s only been a month,” her mother says with a tiny smile. “I think it will probably take longer than that to get used to being here.” She pauses. “And for us to get used to it.”

And Rapunzel realizes now why her mother is awake. “You were checking on me. To make sure I was still here.”

“...Guilty,” she admits. “It’s so hard to believe that you’re really here, sometimes. I keep thinking that it’s a dream I’m going to wake up from.”

Rapunzel considers that for a moment. She hadn’t even known anything was missing from her life, aside from her freedom, until she’d finally met her parents and realised what Mother had taken from her. A family. A… slightly more normal life (she doesn’t delude herself that a princess’s life is anything approaching normal). But her parents… They had known exactly what they were missing.

She shifts a little, moving so that she’s next to her mother, and not facing her. She leans into her side, and rests her head against her shoulder. “I’m real,” she says quietly. “And I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”

“I know,” her mother murmurs softly, resting her head against the top of Rapunzel’s own. “And we’ll have the rest of our lives to get used to it.”

loved it! it must take a long time to suddenly have a new family again, even one you had thought you had lost and were hoping to find.

My heart. ;;;; This was such a beautiful look at Rapunzel's life after the movie, and I loved all the little touches you included, like her hair and her still going barefoot. Really lovely piece.

You capture the changes in their lives very well - it would take a lot of adjusting.
