[#260] Gravity and Other Forces (MCU Thunderbolts)
Theme Prompt: #260 – Mountains
Title: Gravity and Other Forces
Fandom: Thunderbolts (Movie 2025)
Rating/Warnings: Teen and Up Audiences. Mention of something happening in the movie (but is in the disney+ ads, so minor spoiler?).
Bonus: yes
Word Count: 902
Summary: Yelena ropes the Thunderbolts into a weekend of forced team bonding in the wilderness, leading to campfires, questionable nutrition advice, and a few surprises Bob has up his sleeve.
Bob looked, horrified, at Alexei’s third attempt at roasting marshmallows. “I don’t understand. How do you guys keep setting them on fire? You just turn them!”
Alexei gave up, throwing his stick and reaching his drink instead. “Fire makes food taste stronger! Look at me—I am strong because I eat my meat scorched.”
Unimpressed, John leaned back. “That’s not how nutrition works.”
“You would be the guy lecturing about nutrition in the woods,” Ava huffed.
Yelena jumped in, staring into the bonfire with a sigh. “See, I was so close to letting Bucky talk me into cancelling this team bonding weekend. I should have done that. But since we’re in the middle of nowhere, tomorrow you do exactly as I planned.”
“Great, so what’s on the schedule?” Bucky asked “Bear wrestling? Cliff jumping?”
“Rappelling.”
“Ohhh!” Bob snapped his fingers, suddenly excited. “I’m actually good at that!”
John raised a brow. “How are you good at it?”
“My life’s been rough, but I’ve had fun too,” Bob shrugged.
Soon after, the Thunderbolts split into pairs and retired to their tents. As Bob settled in, he ditched his anorak but put on a hoodie for warmth, a smile still on his face.
“Okay, seriously—I bet you didn’t know I’m great at rappelling.”
Yelena gave him a look, setting her hair up in a ponytail. “I feel like that makes no sense.”
“Exactly!” Bob chuckled. “It’s the element of surprise.”
In a nearby tent, Ava and John reflected on their day.
“I think we did okay today. No fights, no disasters,” John commented. “That’s basically a win for us two.”
Ava smirked, but hid it well by rolling to the outside of the tent in her bag. “Talk about me. You were this close to snapping at Bob.”
“Well, he talks a lot.”
“You’re getting used to it, though,” Ava pointed out.
John smirked, his gaze lost on the tent ceiling. “Yeah. Guess I am.”
“This reminds me of an old mission,” Alexei mentioned in the other tent. “Cold nights, bad blankets, worse company.”
Bucky chuckled softly, leaving his metal arm safe. “Sounds familiar.”
“It is not so bad now, though.”
With a nod, Bucky agreed. “Wait, you said I’m bad company?”
His only response was Alexei’s snoring.
The following morning, Yelena woke up to some commotion near the remains of the bonfire. She wrapped a jacket around herself, stepping out of the already-empty tent.
“Lena, c’mon here,” Alexei called her.
“What is going on?” She asked, confused until she reached the circle and found John distributing packs of fruit, yogurt and cookies.
“Who thought Walker would be saving breakfast?” Bob said.
“So this was on the trunk you insisted on taking to the trip, huh?” Ava questioned.
John winked at her. “If you don’t trash talk about me today, I have some of those chips you like hidden in the tent.”
“Good. I was gonna make you hunt for raspberries,” Yelena said.
Bucky turned to her. “Are you serious?”
Yelena looked at him expressionless. “That was a joke, Bucky. Ever heard of humor?”
After sharing their meal in a comfortable silence, the group began their way to the top of the mountain. They followed a trail route Yelena had investigated. If all went as planned, they’d reach their rappelling station after lunchtime.
Ava and John fell into step together, teasing instead of snapping at each other as they listened to Bob’s wild science facts.
“Did you know octopuses have three hearts? But the weird part is, when they swim, one of them just stops working.”
“That is somehow both horrifying and relatable,” Ava pointed out.
Bob grinned. “Right? Like, imagine just deciding, ‘Eh , I don’t need this heart right now.’”
John chuckled. “That’s literally you with survival instincts.”
Behind them, Bucky’s steps felt heavier as he seemed to get behind on purpose. “Everything good?” Yelena nudged him, appearing right beside him.
“Everything’s fine.”
“You know, for a spy you are pretty easy to read,” she mentioned.
“That’s because you’re one too.”
“Can be,” Yelena shrugged. “So, what’s bothering you the most right now?”
“I don’t like heights,” Bucky said for the first time … ever.
“You don’t have to jump, if you’re afraid of heights. The goal is to have fun, not to return with one less Thunderbolt.”
“And you think the others are going to let me just sneak out of it?”
“I mean … I’m pretty sure you already descended from a mountain before, and they haven’t.” She turned to him with a smile. “They’d have to fight me.”
Bob’s voice filled the silence again, this time talking to Alexei. “If you had to swap powers with any original Avenger for a day, who would it be?”
Bucky gave Yelena a tiny smile, thanking her in silence.
“Ha! Trick question—I am the greatest Avenger,” Alexei answered.
Bob sighed dramatically. “No, for real. I think I’d swap with Captain America. Have you seen those wings? How fun would it be to fly?”
Alexei preferred not to mention that time where Bob was lost in the Void and his dark alter ego flew … and made him fly out of the tower with just a wave of his hand. “Fine. I take Thor’s hammer.”
“You can’t just take it.”
“I would be worthy.” Alexei grinned.
“… You think you would be worthy. Those are two separate things”
“Those are two correct things,” Alexei replied smugly.
