[#260] Steep Climb (Harry Potter X SVSSS)
Theme Prompt: 260 - Mountains
Title: Steep Climb
Fandom: Harry Potter, SVSSS
Bonus: No
Word Count: 312
Summary: Harry has gotten to know Shen Qingqiu. Talking to him is still so difficult.
Talking to Shen Qingqiu was like climbing a steep mountain. It wasn’t that the man’s frame was very imposing; in fact, it was quite the opposite. He was slight in stature for all that he was tall, willowy, even, just like the plants he was so protective of. He wasn’t impassible either, for all that he seemed to be at a distance.
No, instead he was closed off, protective, unchanging, and firmly planted in his positions. Just like the mountains that decorated the few paintings of his Harry had gotten to see.
It hadn’t taken long for Harry to notice, and it would have been even shorter if that nebulous connection between the two of them hadn’t existed. But Shen Qingqiu was a guarded man, as Harry now knew. Acerbic, caustic, and very guarded. Firmly grounded in this place he had made his own, like an immovable mountain whose summit was hidden behind a dense group of clouds.
At least Shen Qingqiu had the grace to not pretend to be anything but what he was. When Harry had embarked on that climb that was getting to know the man, he had known it wouldn’t be an easy one. Had known that it would be a mountain filled with treacherous ravines, icy roads that might make him slide down.
He hadn’t looked too far ahead to the future, to the summit hidden behind the clouds. Hadn’t wondered about the lengths Shen Qingqiu would go to in order to keep that place hidden.
He hadn’t known Shen Qingqiu would go as far as to provoke an avalanche out of spite, just because he knew Harry was getting too close to seeing him in his entirety. He hadn’t known Shen Qingqiu would even risk harming himself to make sure he was never vulnerable.
It was infuriating.
It was sad.
And it made Harry barking mad.
