Theme Prompt: #262 - Soulmates
Title: A Change In A New World
Fandom: Original (based on 'Trucks' by Stephen King)
Rating/Warnings: PG | Mechanophilia

Word Count: 699
Summary: Can man and machine be friends ?
AN: I may be a bit rusty as this is the first piece I have written in around 15 months
The cool air from the Kenny’s air conditioner caresses my cheeks, a gentle touch to make sure I’m alright. I smile, knowing he’s aware of it. “Are you alright? In return for taking care of me you’ll get a refreshing bath in the evening, deal?” A low engine rumble was the answer, which meant ‘alright’.
I leaned back on the driver’s seat and closed my eyes. With Kenny I could share peaceful silence, there wasn’t the need for constant conversation. It was just him and me. Our friendship was truly remarkable and the fact that he was a sentient truck and I a merely human man was even more unique.
Even by now more humans had gotten used to the sentient vehicles, there was hardly anyone who tried to bond with them. For the most part they still feared them. I was still getting weird looks and was well aware of how people talked behind my back about my friendship with Kenny.
Unlike literally everyone else, I had been fascinated from the moment I first met him. While I thought back to how we met and how we gradually became friends I was chewing on my bottom lip as I was certain that my feelings for Kenny had evolved into love. He was everything I have ever wanted to find in a man. It was nothing I wanted to talk about tonight, as I wasn’t sure how Kenny would react and for once I was relieved that it was hot outside so we could just exist for the moment.
In the evening we left the shadowy place and returned to the city. In his garage I have him the promised bath, spoiling him as much as a friend could. From the sounds of his engine I could tell that Kenny was as content as a truck could be.
“Thank you. The polishing was an unexpected surprise.” Kenny’s truck equivalent of a chuckle followed. “You’re welcome, dear” I petted his front grill and leaned against him.
~ Several weeks later ~
“Can I ask you something? I am sure it sounds silly but … I have been thinking about this for a while now.” Hearing Kenny anxious was something I haven’t witnessed before. Needless to say that I was worried. I looked into his headlights before I climbed up into the cabin. “Not a conversation a passer-by should overhear, right?” It was a rhetorical question, not worth answering so I added encouraging “Remember: There are no silly questions.”
Silence. I was waiting patiently for Kenny to speak. “A while ago you’ve told me about soulmates”, he began and I heard the uncertainty in his voice. Hesitatingly he continued “Do you believe that this is possible for us too? I mean, I am not a human but … I have feelings too”. The last words had been a hushed whisper and I was certain if Kenny could blush, he would have.
“I believe it’s possible. I think having a soulmate bond with someone vastly different than you is wonderful.” I can’t help but smile and notice the fuzzy warm feeling inside of me.
“Hmm.”
One word, which was agreement, yet had a sad undertone to it. I raised my eyebrow. “Are you alright Kenny? You know you can tell me everything.”
I got up from the driver’s seat and laid down on the bed in the back of the cabin. “Kenny?” I looked at the ceiling of the cabin and couldn’t keep the worry out of my voice. I wasn’t used to him being in a low mood.
“Do you believe in love at first sight?”
His question hit me unprepared and for a split second I was wondering if I had misheard what he had said. “What?” I answered with a counter question out of sheer surprise before I added “I mean … It’s not unheard of. Personally I never had that happen to me.”
I had a gut-feeling that I knew why Kenny had asked. I had noticed how my own feelings for him had gradually turned into love.
“Before you ask, yes I believe we can be more than soulmates. The world has changed Kenny, and why not add another change to it.”
