[#263] warning do not separate (Blue Lock)

Theme Prompt: 263 - Genius
Title: warning do not separate
Fandom: Blue Lock
Rating/Warnings: General
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 700
Summary: Reo has plans for himself and Nagi through Blue Lock and after. It will all be fine so long as they're together.

Reo Mikage chews around the silver spoon in his mouth as he digs his knife into the steak in front of him. It’s good quality, steaming faintly from the hot plate it rests on, and he cuts a small piece, spearing some mush onto the fork as well.

It claims to be green beans.

Reo will agree only that it used to be green.

Nagi tips towards Reo without looking away from his phone, a planet gently drifting out of orbit at the silent behest of a sun, and opens his mouth for the fork. Reo feeds him, peers over his shoulder at the game — tiny figures swarm over a battlefield, a row of towers at either side firing an array of items. Some part of Reo’s brain catalogues this, carved out the section that could be given over to adverts and the likely cost per click that would generate, and he peels that layer away, turning his attention back to Nagi.

Nagi’s side are winning, a relentless flood of tiny purple sparks landing amongst the flagging enemy army.

The other boy doesn’t react to this or to Reo dropping the fork back into the dish before lying along Nagi’s side. They could be closer, would be before the day finished, before the week, before the month, before the year when they stood on the same pitch in the same colours, their teammates blurred and indistinct and unimportant because they will win the World Cup together and nothing else matters but that.

Wanting something that Reo couldn’t immediately have is new.

It’s only happened twice before that he can remember.

He wants the World Cup Trophy, and he wants Nagi.

He has a plan for one, Blue Lock acting as a helpful stepping stone in his endeavours, and for the other…

Reo turns his face into Nagi’s shoulder, the crook of his neck, breathes in the plain scent of his shampoo. It doesn’t suit him, plain in the face of Nagi’s brilliance, but it’s what they all smell like in Blue Lock, or the sharp tang of sweat after a match. Reo would make sure they matched in some small way once they were out of here, once they were both champions, sandalwood and jasmine, just enough that they are undeniable. Reo’s father can’t see that, blinded by his contentment of everything that they can just buy, but Nagi is special. No. He’s more than special, he’s unique, he’s one of a kind, he’s Reo’s.

“Hey, Reo?”

“Yes, Nagi?” Reo’s attention returns to Nagi like it had never slipped away from him at all. He extracts himself just enough from Nagi’s shoulder as the other boy shifts beneath his hold, his phone held between two careless fingers.

Nagi waves the phone at Reo, a single moment replaying on the screen. One of the small figures stands at the front of the army, sword drawn and held aloft, before it pivots to reveal a second figure behind it, a glowing purple ball cupped to its chest before it fires. “We should do something like this in the next game. They’ll know to watch you so you can cover me, like you normally do but closer.”

It’s so obvious when Nagi says it, the pieces slotting into place behind Reo’s eyes like they’d never been apart.

“Or something like that,” Nagi continues, slowly dropping down, his head curling forwards to rest against the table. “Can’t believe I’ve just said that, it’s exhausting.”

“Here, stand up. I’ll carry you back to our rooms.” Reo nudges Nagi as he stands and crouches next to the table. Nagi whines a little, softly and mostly under his breath, but complies with Reo’s instruction. It takes a moment, Nagi’s limbs deliberately slack and uncooperative even as the other boy blinks up at Reo in absent boredom. He’s a warm weight against Reo’s back, his arms slung around Reo’s shoulders, mumbling nonsense into his neck as Nagi drifts off into a doze as Reo walks, but that is the cost of genius and Reo has the money to burn for it.

He’ll make sure that Nagi is the best in the world, that they’re together at the top.
