Theme Prompt: #284 - Home for the Holidays
Title: Never Too Old
Fandom: Mahou Sentai Magiranger
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 620
Summary: Makito and Houka discuss holiday traditions, and the prospect of outgrowing them.
"I’m glad you’re here."
Ever since he'd come through the door, she'd been looking at him as if he'd been gone forever, not just for the last few months. Of course she missed him, everyone else had, but Houka was acting very...un-Houka-like about it. Usually she'd be demanding all the juicy details of his time in Brazil; had he met any cute girls yet, did those girls have any cute brothers, what was the weather like, were the teachers as strict as theirs when they were still in high school.
"She's pacing herself," Tsubasa had joked, but Mom and Urara had noticed Houka's behavior as well. Had her latest modeling job gone badly? Had a guy broken her heart this time? Was it something more serious?
Everything else was still the same as it was when he left, other than Kai officially dating Yuka Yamazaki now and Smokey having a baby sister, a kitten Urara had rescued from the side of the road. Tsubasa's still boxing, Mom and Dad were still happier than ever to be reunited, and all the old decorations waited to be hung on the tree and the banisters.
Then it came time to take out the costumes, and something clicked in Makito's head.
"You're worried you're getting too old for this, aren't you?" She held her Mrs. Santa Claus dress in both hands, staring wistfully down at it. "To be honest, the thought crossed my mind as well. Am I too grown-up to dress as a reindeer? I'm a man of the world now."
"And I'll be a woman of the world soon, next year I get to go to Milan for a modeling job!" Houka said. "And then they're talking about sending me to Paris and America, and I'm this close to being able to afford my own apartment! So why am I still dressing in silly costumes for silly photos?"
"Even though you've worn similar things for your jobs?" Makito teased. Houka pouted, putting the dress down and folding her arms over her chest.
"That's different. I dunno why, it just is." She sighed. "But you're still doing it, right? You're going to wear your costume and do your silly poses?" He nodded. Silly, embarrassing, childish, the kind of thing he'd be reluctant to tell his classmates in Brazil about even though he'd seen photos of Paulo and Lucas in the ridiculous sweaters their aunt knitted them from scratch every year.
But it wouldn't feel like Christmas if we didn't wear them, Paulo said. And it was the same for the reindeer costume.
"Of course. And you'll wear your Mrs. Claus dress, right?" Houka smiled.
"You know I will! Especially now that you're here and I know you're not too old for this stuff!" She flung her arms around him, and he smiled, hugging her back.
"We never will be. Even when you and I have our own kids, and even when they think they're too grown up." Houka grinned.
"Who said I was going to have kids anytime soon? Urara and Hikaru might surprise us any day now, and when Kai and Yuka grow up they'll probably have a few, so Mom and Dad will be all set for grandkids!" Makito chuckled.
"Then someday when I find Mrs. Right, we'll dress our kids like reindeer and angels." Houka giggled.
"I'm glad you're here," she said again. Makito hugged her again, then reached for a cute little angel ornament she'd made years ago and somehow was still in one piece.
"I'm glad to be here." He placed the ornament at the front of the tree, where he hoped everyone would see it. Holiday traditions were always worth keeping, no matter how old you were.
