Title: all is calm, all is bright

Summary: Who is enjoying Christmas the most in the house this year? (set post-canon)
In the past, when Anne and her brother Nicholas had photo-sensitivity, Christmas was something celebrated in a darkened house. There had been some magic present though when the Christmas tree with all its decorations had sparkled in the lamp light at night.
But ever since the Bad Thing had happened, the house had been transformed into one where sunlight poured through the windows without harming them. Christmas was much nicer now when you could enjoy it during the day as well. It was like being in a new home for the holidays.
This year, Anne helped Mr Tuttle bring down the artificial tree from the attic. The elderly servant smiled indulgently down at her. They accidentally dropped a box in the process, but no harm was done.
"I'm glad you're here," he said kindly to Anne.

There's noises in the attic and Susan heard something heavy fall on the floor up there. She heard it, she knows she did. She goes up to check but there's nothing there. Coming home to the island of Jersey now the war is over was supposed to be wonderful. She tells herself it is.

Anne likes decorating the tree with Nicholas, though sometimes he gets bossy about which decorations go where. But soon his temper passes and they laugh at times.

Susan hears children's voices in one of the main rooms, a boys voice sounding loud and self-important about decorations. Trembling but trying not to, she opens the door. There's no children there, or in the house. Her husband is at work and the cook is in the kitchen. She had been looking forward to her first Christmas here, but decorations are the last thing on her mind right now.
Susan had heard stories about this house and a former family who lived, died and then haunted the house afterwards, but it had been so cheap. The stories of hauntings must have been silliness, surely? She's not so sure, now.

Bertha smiled to herself in the hallway. Christmas is a special time and sometimes the living and the dead encounter each other then in this house. They can learn to get along but if they can't, then those living will depart. Such a pity.
