[Amnesty 029] Jealous (Bleach)
Theme Prompt: Jealousy
Title: Jealous
Fandom: Bleach
Rating/Warnings: E
Word Count: 625
Summary: It wasn't jealousy that Kyouka Suigetsu felt when staring at the newest source of Sousuke's fascination.
It wasn’t jealousy.
Kyouka Suigetsu was staring at the Hogyoku like it would hold the answer to all their questions.
Well… Stared… Sousuke’s inner world, Kyouka Suigetsu’s domain, wasn’t a place where one could stare exactly. And the Hogyoku didn’t exactly hold a physical form, so staring may not have been the right word for what was happening..
Not that it mattered much in the grand scheme of things; whatever emotion was meant to be felt in a staredown, Kyouka Suigetsu was expressing it at the Hogyoku. It wasn’t jealousy they felt. One couldn’t be jealous of an inanimate object, as doted of its own will as this one seemed to be. And Kyouka Suigetsu wasn’t a jealous being; had never had any reason to be.
And yet, Kyouka Suigetsu felt observed in turn, as they examined the Hogyoku with their spiritual energy. They felt naked and found wanting, like they weren’t worth the attention but simply an existing object in the Hogyoku’s field of view. It was an uncomfortable feeling, especially when Kyouka knew it was more likely to be some kind of projection rather than reality. The knowledge of it didn’t make the feeling easier to bear.
After all, Sousuke had abandoned them so easily.
Kyouka Suigetsu and Sousuke Aizen had been a team for so long. They’d grown up together after all, learning their abilities as a tandem. It had been the both of them against the world, willing to do anything to achieve their goal and all too aware of what could happen if they were discovered. Hiding had always been second nature to Kyouka Suigetsu, and Kyouka Suigetsu reveled in hiding in a way Sousuke didn’t. Sousuke chafed under the subterfuge, wanted everyone to see his grandeur, whereas Kyouka Suigetsu revelled in utilizing their abilities to pretend to be something. It had been good, for Kyouka Suigetsu to be able to compensate for Sousuke’s weakness. They had been the best team.
And yet it had been so easy for Sousuke to throw them away.
Throw them away for a powerful object that didn’t offer the same communion, the same harmony Kyouka Suigetsu could. Kyouka Suigetsu could have accused the Hogyoku of hoodwinking Sousuke, of ensorcelling him. But that would be removing Sousuke’s agency. That would mean embracing a comfortable lie to avoid being confronted with the naked truth.
Kyouka Suigetsu hadn’t noticed, but Sousuke had always been looking for something stronger than them, something better. Kyouka wasn’t enough. And being jealous of the object that had brought that reality into relief would be to hide their head in the sand.
And Kyouka Suigetsu was well-versed enough in illusions to know that it was easy to become the victim of one. They considered for a moment ignoring their finding. Pretending that Sousuke hadn’t truly given them up, that it was just a temporary indulgence.
In that world, Kyouka Suigetsu could welcome the Hogyoku, add it to their subterfuge, obey Sousuke in everything even if they were no longer a team, even if their relationship of equals had become a relationship of master and subordinate. They could live like that. They could live with that.
And in that world, Kyouka Suigetsu would be pushed aside, maybe even fused into the Hogyoku. They might disappear entirely, or lose themself and become nothing but an object. A tool.
Kyouka Suigetsu wasn’t as power hungry as Sousuke; they weren’t in it for the recognition. But they wanted to live and wanted their work to be appreciated nonetheless. And it was fast becoming clear that this recognition and appreciation wouldn’t be coming at Sousuke’s side.
They had to look elsewhere. There was no other choice if Kyouka Suigetsu wanted to keep existing, rather than be absorbed. So no.
It wasn’t jealousy that Kyouka Suigetsu felt when staring at the newest source of Aizen’s fascination. It was something far closer to fear.
