Bug turned as a figure appeared behind the frosted glass panes of the houseboat's front door. A moment later, Dani clattered out onto the front deck in her spiky heels, spilling some of the noise of the party into the otherwise quiet night before shutting the door behind her.
"Gettin' kinda crowded in there," Bug said with a toothy but weak smile.
Dani nodded in agreement, hoisting herself up on onto the railing. Her feet dangled above the twinkling water. "It was nice of you to host this year," she said in Spanish. "Your place is adorable."
Bug nodded in bashful appreciation of the compliment. "My pleasure." And it was: not just because it was cheaper to have everyone over to his place than to make another intercontinental flight for their yearly get-together, but because he loved the feeling of his small home being filled with his favorite people in the world. He was already mourning his friends' inevitable departure at the end of the weekend, but he knew that he'd be able to go on feeling their presence, feeling the love they infused the place with, long after they left.
And maybe it was the beer, but he'd begun to feel a different kind of wistfulness set in as he'd watched everyone laughing and dancing and clumsily tidying up the piles of books and electronics they kept bumping into. He'd laughed and danced a little too, but eventually he'd ended up on one of the mismatched stools in the kitchen, watching through the open doorway as Riley cuddled up on Will's lap, as Lito and Dani guided Hernando's hips in time with the reggaeton beat pulsing through the room, as Rajan tipped his head back in hysterics as Wolfgang and Kala sandwiched him on the makeshift dancefloor, as Felix showed Nomi and Amanita something apparently captivating on his phone, as Capheus fed a dubious Zakia one of the messy hors d'ouevres that Bug had made, as Sun and Mun stood against a wall, making their hushed running commentary in Korean as they nursed their drinks. He loved them all, and he loved the way they loved each other, and the way he had been folded into that love...but...
"Sometimes I still can't believe it," Dani said, pressing her cold beer bottle to her gleaming forehead, then to the side of her neck. It was only mildly cooler, and certainly no less humid, out on the deck than it was inside.
Bug gave a throaty huff of laughter and an emphatic nod before he realized he wasn't sure what Dani was referring to. The small miracle of getting all of these far-flung people together in one place? The whole psychic link thing? The fact that they were all alive?
"This is my life," she said through an awestruck smile.
Ah, Bug thought. That. He turned to her; her face seemed awash with soft, flowing light.
For a moment, they both listened to the water lapping against the boat, the clunky tinkle of the wooden windchimes, the thump of the beat and the cackles of laughter from inside, the distant whoosh of traffic.
"You know those dating reality shows?" Dani said, quickly turning to face him. "At the end, when they're getting ready to get married, the woman always says something like, 'I've been dreaming of my wedding since I was a little girl...'"
Bug nodded. He was familiar with those shows, but he had no idea where Dani was going. She seemed a little tipsy, and part of him wanted to get her down off the railing before she tipped over into the Creek...but he knew that there was no stopping her once she got going with a train of thought.
"I never dreamed about that." She took a long pull of her beer. "And you know how sometimes you hear people say something like, 'Ugh, I haven't had sex in a month, I think I'm going to die?'"
Bug chuckled at Dani's impression of what sounded like a mix between the world's dumbest jock and the world's ditziest bimbo. "Sure," he said.
"Cannot relate."
Bug nodded and sipped his beer, wondering where Dani was going with this.
"I just knew what I wanted was different from what everyone else wanted. It was like...everyone else was eating tamales, but I don't like tamales, I like...I don't know, pho. But I didn't even know pho existed. But I was craving it anyway. Does that make sense?"
"Uh...sure," Bug declared.
"And then I discovered...pho exists. And it's delicious," she moaned dramatically.
"Pho is good," Bug said, for lack of anything else to say.
"My point is," Dani said, scooting a little closer to Bug's chair. "I see the way you look at Lito sometimes. And the way you look at Nomi. And I see something in you that I used to see in myself. This feeling that what you want is impossible. The kind of love you want to give and receive."
Bug suddenly felt his eyes misting over. Was this what it was like for them, to have someone step inside your head like that, to feel that seen? He was a hacker; he was used to finding his way into any system, past any firewall. But he'd always felt like there was a locked door between him and the kind of life, the kind of love he wanted. He didn't even know what was behind that door, exactly, just that it had been pulling on his heart for his whole life...and that he couldn't open it on his own. Somehow, Dani saw--knew--all that. Was the sensate thing contagious?
"We've seen a lot of stuff that should be impossible," Dani said, reaching down to take Bug's hand. "That's possible too."
Bug wiped at his eye with a knobby knuckle and stared out at the highway overpass. "Love has no boundaries but death," he croaked.
"Not Lito's best movie," Dani said with a sly smile. "But yeah. That's the idea."
