[#297] the spring breeze, revised (Kirby Super Star Ultra/Kirby's Dream Land)
Theme Prompt: #297 - Unexpected Kindness
Title: the spring breeze, revised
Fandom: Kirby (particularly, the Spring Breeze segment of Kirby Super Star Ultra / Kirby's Dream Land (1992))
Rating/Warnings: PG / Allusions to Kirby Star Allies, timeline shenanigans, a Magolor Is Good AU known as Mahoroa of the Stars and a "Void becomes a new Kirby" AU (name pending I guess lol)
Word Count: 992 words :)
Bonus: Yes!!
Author's Note: AND I RETURNETH, HA! It's been a very long while since I've posted on Dreamwidth and the Kirby hyperfixation came back! This was, in part, inspired by this Youtube video I love, hehe. Also, a comic I read recently gave me inspiration. The timeline shenanigans are because of the whole "Void becomes a new Kirby" thing, I may have to explore that in a future writing challenge. Hope ya'll enjoy!
Summary: Newly landed in Dreamland, Kirby, with only the memory of his own name, beats up and then offers friendship to a new man he meets by the name of King Dedede, unknowingly touching the mean penguin's long-lonely heart with his actions.
--
On a pale spring day, weak eyes open to the spring breeze. Their owner blinks awake, and for a moment considers the warm sunrise shining on his .. face ..?
With a blink, he once imagines a battlefield deep inside a monster, two kind faces holding up a twinkling star. Gold eyes, brown fur. Blue eyes, bright pink fuzz.
But then he blinks and the world is bright with other colors - pink flowers, green grass. He remembers the older floating brown and gold thing naming him Kaabii.
(Is that right? Yes .. My name is..)
Kaabii is too long.. But Kirby feels just right.
Kirby, then.
Kirby springs up from where he landed in the grass, wiping off grass stains from his very pale off-white fuzz and equally pale feet, surprised that there is a small crater around him and his Warp Star. Patting it, the thing shrinks, and he smiles and picks up the now smaller star to take with him.
Kirby then startles as he is bumped into by an odd orange and brown thing about his height, running past with things that smell delicious. The memory in his mind of the pink and blue thing mentions food, and he reasons what he just saw must be food.
But why?
Kirby frowns as he sees more of the orange and brown beings carrying food, all in the same direction, towards a high tower far in the distance. He huffs, starting to recognize that this is wrong. That pink and blue thing talked about food in the same breath as kindness, and taking food makes it .. bad, does it not?!
Huffing more, Kirby takes off for the distant mountain, determined to follow the orange and brown things and bring back the stolen food!
–
By the time he finds where he needs to go, Kirby is pretty tired, panting from battling a few people for their food and Sparkling Stars to return to the Dreamlanders as they called the food’s original owners. Yet, he is still okay, padding up in a dark room only lighting a strange platform with symbols all over. Kracko, that jerk of a cloud, called the culprit of all this Dedede..
Oddly enough, his sole memory before had someone similar. Blue eyes, blue skin, yellow beak. He was stronger..
Kirby frowns again. If the penguin thing is the same as the food thief, he has to do something to make him be nice. And fast, before the Dreamlanders go hungry! He slides under the weird ropes, and that is when the penguin called Dedede also climbs in, staring at him.
Kirby yelps as Dedede begins swinging a hammer, waving his nubs. “Wait, poyo–”
He has to dodge, and thinking fast, he inhales some air and spits out a star, blinding the king and allowing him a moment to kick Dedede back.
“Listen, poyo, this is bad! You have to give back the food!”
Dedede smirks, shaking his head. “Why should I?”
Kirby grunts and takes the hammer from Dedede’s flippers following a kick, using what momentum he has to straight up knock Dedede out of the ring. What he intended was for the penguin to land.. and what he gets is Dedede yelling as he flies into the ceiling.
(..I gotta give back the food.. Huff..)
–
Later, once the food is given back, once the castle is put back, Kirby is alone at last, tired from meeting the people of Dreamland, when he hears soft crying. Curious, and also concerned, he plods over, realizing it is Dedede, having landed in some mud. The penguin slumps over, upset, and still bruised up from before.
Immediately Kirby feels bad, and takes a couple steps forward.
“I’m.. I’m sorry about before, poyo. But you were being mean, mister.”
Dedede grunts, and Kirby tries to place a nub on the man’s gloved flipper, which Dedede twitches away from. “No, poyo, please understand! I want to help.”
“I don’t need any help, kid,” the king sighs, his voice teary as he gets up. “Leave me alone.”
“It doesn’t cost anything for me to be kind to you, poyo!” Kirby insists, waving his nubs. “Can’t we be friends, poyo?”
“No.”
Kirby watches Dedede walk away, and he again remembers the two who gave him his Warp Star with such a kind smile.. Remembering this, he reproduces the warm smile, and starts following Dedede, grabbing a watermelon on the way from a pile of gifts from the Dreamlanders.
(That’s what I got to do for you, mister Dedede.. I .. am going to be your friend if it’s the last thing I do!)
In the reflection of a pond near his feet, Kirby only sees it for a moment - a bright pink that spreads from head to toe - as he continues behind Dedede. “Please? I’ll share my snack with you, mister!”
“I said no, an’ that’s final,” Dedede says, his voice still heavy as he turns to gently push Kirby backwards.
“Okay.. But I’ll bother you tomorrow!”
–
Dedede wipes the last of his tears as the odd kid vanishes over the hill back towards the local Cappy settlement, confused. Confused that Kirby who just beat him up can just.. offer friendship so flippantly. Confused how the hell some kid managed to knock his hammer out of his hold and throw him so far.. It makes him question his own heart for being hopeful when Kirby offered to share a watermelon.. And what was with the pale kid turning pink anyway?
He decides not to question that further, choosing to trudge home before it gets too late in the night. Yet.. Dedede’s skin feels like it crawls under his feathers when he makes it into bed, as if sleep isn’t going to be easy. Dedede shuts his eyes and tries to sleep, his body exhausted..
(He’s right to worry about his sleep the next day – It’s full of dreams of Kirby defeating him and some dark stranger adorned with stars..)
