Theme Prompt: #018: Law and Order
Title: 'Nor Iron Bars a Cage...'
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating/Warnings: G; No warnings

Summary: Perhaps this place is Hell for the other inmates. But, for River, it's the only home she has.

Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage...

~*~ Richard Lovelace
from 'To Althea, from Prison'

Stormcage isn't so bad. Not really. Or perhaps it's all a matter of perspective. After all, not everyone is lucky enough to say that such a high-security prison can't contain them.

It isn't that she likes the sight of sturdy bars around her; in fact, she hates them. They are a constant reminder that she is being held for a crime she technically did not commit. The legal system branded her as guilty, but she knows--never mind the blurriness of the details--that she is innocent.

But Stormcage is probably the safest place for her to be, given her association with--given her love for--the Doctor. Her involvement with him has, by default, given her innumerable enemies. If there is any safe haven for her anywhere in the cosmos, then it is here.

Perhaps this place is Hell for the other inmates. But, for River, it's the only home she has.

So she bides her time, serves her sentence. Waits patiently for the pardon she hopes will come soon.

That beautiful, grinding-whooshing-wheezing noise--oh, that silly idiot; he left the brakes on again!--makes every moment worth her while.
