[023] Keeping It Straight (Dark Matter)
Theme Prompt: [#023] - In For A Penny
Title: Keeping It Straight
Fandom: Dark Matter
Rating/Warnings: PG / None.
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 405
Summary: Devon's trying to keep everything straight while everything's changing
Devon glanced around the ship’s sickbay. It was well-appointed and had far better equipment than his old office back at the prison. He looked back to the young girl who had escorted him down here. She was regarding him expectantly.
“Um,” he said, trying to remember how she’d been introduced to him. “You’re, uh, Three?”
“No,” she giggled. “I’m Five. Three’s the grumpy one who’s mean to everyone.”
“Oh, right. Nothing like you at all, then.” Devon ran through the other crew members in his head. “What about the asian guy with the swords and the black guy everyone’s mad at?”
“Four and Six,” she said, simply.
“And the really hot one?”
She giggled again. “That’s Two - but don’t let her hear you refer to her like that.”
“Got it.” Devon’s head was spinning. He really didn’t think he had it at all. “Isn’t there a Number One?”
Her face fell. “He, um, died, while we were on the planet.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Devon tried to think of a way to lighten the mood. “Didn’t anyone think of taking over the number one slot?”
He had apparently miscalculated, since she looked horrified. “Of course not! Besides, Two’s always been in charge, anyway.” A hint of a smile crept back into her expression. “No matter what Three might think.”
“What about the android?” Devon asked. “Doesn’t she get a number?”
“No.” The girl looked thoughtful. “We just call her Android. I wonder if she might like a different name. I’ll have to ask her.”
The sickbay doors opened and the imposing figure of the woman known as Two strode in. She looked at Devon speculatively.
“So?” she said, raising one eyebrow. “What do you think about joining the crew of the Raza?”
Devon considered. The setup here was pretty hinky, not least because most of the rest of the crew had just escaped from prison. But he had wanted to come with them for a reason, hadn’t he? He wondered, though, if sticking with them would turn out to be more trouble than it was worth. He glanced back at Five, and the hopeful smile she gave him was the most genuine expression he had seen in what felt like forever.
He took a deep breath. “What’s that ancient Earth expression? In for a penny…”
The girl cocked her head at him. “What’s a penny?” she asked.
Devon smiled back at her. “I have no idea.”
