short sleep

I wonder if I'm going to run short of sleep for the entirety of the holiday.

IDK. Maybe I could have a rest on Tuesday? Theoretically speaking.

I am 1000 words into the Daryan-centric Sonata sequel and having such a good time :D One thing I've missed from writing Transformers is fic where all of these characters are some flavor of awful; I like good-guy characters too, but you can have so much fun with an entire cast of characters who are morally ambiguous at best and are still trying, in horrible fumbling ways, to do the right thing.

LEP 30.8.

After trying for three hours to unsuccessfully get my Quest 2 to acknowledge that it's connected to a PC so that the apparently contextual "use USB connection for troubleshooting" popup would show up and let me add my current computer as a trusted source, I've reached a level of loathing for Meta that I didn't think was possible.

Like. Let's be 100% clear about something. Consumer VR is not going to be viable at least for the next five years, and it's not because the hardware is too unaffordable -- it's because Meta is a greedy control freak of a company that makes me spin around five times and then get on my knees to beg for permission to work on apps to sell on their platform, and will still arbitrarily refuse me because of the phase of the moon or something.

If this had happened while I was at work, needing to USB troubleshoot something on a Quest 2 and instead doing stupid little dances for the hardware provider and getting nowhere, I would just. Quit. I would quit. And probably throw my Quest through a window.

Pentiment review

Finished Pentiment and. God I love it. It takes place in 1500s Barvaria and is about an artist, Andreas Maler, who stays in the small town of Tassing after he finishes his apprenticeship and ends up solving a murder while he's there. There are so many things I like about it - the artstyle, which mimics medieval art is gorgeous. I also really like how it uses different fonts to represent different characters - most get a simply handwriting script, learned characters get a slightly neater one, characters associated with printers have stamped/printed text, etc. You can also see the scripts being written out as they go, with mistakes that are then erased and fixed (you can also set the text to appear instantly or be in simpler fonts in the accessibility menu, if it bothers you. There's also a text to speech option as well). Another thing I really like is the diversity of the game. While there isn't much in terms of race, etc, as one might expect from a small Bavarian town, there is a bit - several disabled and gay characters, a visiting priest from Ethiopia, a Romani man, and a Jewish family, all of whom are written in a well-rounded, thoughtful way. In addition to this diversity of identity, there is also a great deal of diversity of opinion and class position - peasants and townsfolk with a variety of opinions on each other and whether they should fight for a better life, mothers and nuns with varying degrees of contentment about their lives, etc.

A huge part of the game is discovering hidden truths that have been buried over, and related to that, the idea that knowledge is power, and that you should therefore be careful with what you know. I can't really get into details without spoilers, but a lot of the game focuses on uncovering information, and then deciding what to do with that, which can have profound effects on people's lives. The game also uses these themes, especially in the third act, to reflect on how we remember the past, and how we can judge people back then and find them strange based on our own beliefs and lives, when in reality they were just people

Overall it's a great game that I highly recommend, definitely one I want to replay

Random Doctor Who Picture

Cover for the Doctor Who Past Doctor Adventure Palace of the Red Sun by Christopher Bulis. Picture of a domed palace with four pointy turrets. The silhouettes of two figures, one in a long dress and one in a shorter one walk down an avenue of upright trees to the palace. Everything is in oranges and yellows.

Another blank in my memory. The back makes it sound like there is an underlying quest style narrative which, as I recall, is common in Bulis' works.

Friday Fauna: Fortuitous Finds Edition

It's been a rough year for my houseplants. A bunch are fighting mealybug. Many of the ones that aren't have some weird sort of polyp-y mold infesting the soil. The ones that don't have mealybug or mold Have Feelings To Express about the seesawing humidity and light levels with which 2025 has graced us.

Despite my best efforts, I've lost dozens since January and am in danger of losing my peace lily, which was was flourishing beautifully until suddenly it wasn't. So it was with great delight that I encountered this beauty on the sidewalk, waiting to be rehomed:

A picture of a peace lily.

It's currently sitting next to my original peace lily, in the hopes that it will lend some pep to the latter.

LEP 29.8.

This may be a callous statement from someone who as of today has not yet installed a Linux distro on my computer, but I think for the purposes of getting Linux gaming ahead, it would be fair for developers to only explicitly provide support for certain combinations of distros and install methods. If Linux users, a 0.1% of the base, are generating over 20% of the bug tickets during a game's lifetime, that's not sustainable for developers to try to respond to.

On the other hand I'm really disappointed in F-secure for having no Linux support even on their industry side.

The Listeners

I was really looking forward to this because I've loved a lot of Maggie Stiefvater's work in the past - and, while I did enjoy this overall, it wasn't as good as I'd hoped.
It's about German and Japanese diplomats being sent to a luxury hotel in the Appalachians after Pearl Harbour in 1942, and how this affects the staff of the hotel.
Our main protagonist is June, the general manager of the hotel - and I really liked her. Her story also has a lot of layers relating to both class and gender politics, which are all interesting and well done.
I also liked Hannelore, the autistic little girl who gets wrapped up in the story - though we didn't get enough of her.
And that's my main criticism of the book overall. Despite it being nearly 400 pages, it really felt as if almost nothing happened and there wasn't nearly enough time devoted to anything for me to invest in the relationships or be emotionally affected by any of the events.
So, it was fine - but I was hoping for more.
