[#028] Adjustment
Theme Prompt: #028: Old-Fashioned
Title: 'Adjustment'
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating/Warnings: G; No warnings
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 355
Summary: Together, they've endured so much. And they're stronger for it.
The flat doesn't feel like home just yet. They haven't had enough time to fix it up. Or money--what money they do have won't be printed for decades, and not enough of it is in American currency. At least the flat itself is a touch of stability; due to the mysteries of timey-wimeyness, it's already in Rory's name. There will be tricks to play with getting their hands on believable identification, of course. But they cross every bridge as they come to it.
It's tricky to get used to having no mobile service. It's one thing to know that there are no towers for signals to ping off of yet; it's quite another to live that reality. No mobile phones, no Internet (right now, if a computer isn't a room-sized monstrosity, then it's a human being), no television.
Jobs are difficult to come by; the Great Depression is still a reality. At first, Rory takes odd jobs, while Amy tries to submit articles to magazines. While work is far from steady, they're able to make ends meet. With time, Rory is able to go back to school and relearn nursing; the medical treatment of this time period is so much less advanced than what he learned in his own time that the knowledge he has is too futuristic to fall back on.
There are times, in the beginning, when they both wish that they could live the way they're accustomed to. There have been so many difficult adjustments to make, secrets they must keep from the people who become their neighbors. There are unforeseen burdens that they both must carry.
But this is life now. Their future is set in stone, in the most literal sense, though the grave marker won't be in place for many years. Marriage can't change the future, this time.
But it can make that future more endurable.
They're together. Where they should be. Where they were always meant to be. For better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness, in health.
Together, they've endured so much. And they're stronger for it.
Hand in hand, they'll get through this.

I've always love when adept writers explore the hidden depths of time travel in meta fiction! Thank you so much for this. What a nice way to tie off my evening. :3
