[#028] Vaguely Far-off Destination (A Series of Unfortunate Events)
Theme Prompt: #028 - Old-Fashioned
Title: Vaguely Far-off Destination
Fandom: A Series of Unfortunate Events
Rating/Warnings: G / vaaague spoilers for several moments in the series
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 400
Everything reminds her of their past.
It doesn’t help that they’re living new lives for now, far away from organizations and schisms and answers. Their neighbors’ flower gardens remind her of reptilian topiaries. Every passing bird makes her think of hot-air balloons and angry crowds. And when winter comes, she can’t stop thinking about climbing a never-ending waterfall, right alongside--
Right. Well. At this point, she’s surprised she can use a kettle without imagining the stove bursting into flames like Aunt Josephine.
She lifts the kettle off of the heat, coming to the table to pour the water into two mugs, tea bags and milk already set at the bottom of the cups. Klaus watches with serious eyes, a book held upright in his hands as if she won’t notice his gaze. Violet only makes tea when she needs something to occupy her mind, and he knows that. Still, it’s too early in the morning for conversations, so Violet pours and Klaus watches and the clock above the dining table ticks loudly with each passing second.
Sunny will wake up in a couple hours, loose-limbed and bright-eyed, and then the day will really begin. She’ll prepare breakfast in the kitchen, and Klaus will page through the newspaper, and Violet will fiddle with the kettle to see if it can’t boil water faster. They’ll settle into the life they’ve cobbled together for themselves, giving themselves a plethora of reasons to be busy so that they don’t have time to let their thoughts linger on the winding path they took to get here. But for now, the morning is still, and Violet knows she and her brother are just moments away from spiraling.
He lifts his mug to his lips after a couple seconds have passed. She does the same. The tea is just a little too hot as it goes down. Not as bitter as wormwood. Not as sharp as a double-edged sword. Just plain tea, on a plain morning, in a plain house.
One day, she hopes the world won’t constantly remind her of pain and hardship. One day, she hopes she can face her past head-on, instead of using her engineering mind to invent new ways to run away from it.
But for now, she’s recovering, a word which here means that it might take some time to get to contentment, but she’s trying her best to get there.

Considering the books are full of content that lacks any straightforward dialogue, I thought you captured the overwhelming atmosphere very well!
I've read all the books except for the final volume, and it was such a long time ago that I'd forgotten most of the story, but this... it's such a lovely, little thing full of phenomenal hidden depths. You make me want to give the series another go around. As an adult, I'm curious what kind of perspective I will gleen out of it. :3
Thank you for this~
