Summary: This space is too small to hold so many people.
This space is too small to hold so many people. There's an almost claustrophobic crush to the atmosphere, the sense that the entire room may somehow shatter if pushed past its limits.
Deep down, you have a feeling that this is not where you're meant to be. You should be somewhere else. There's something crucial that you're not doing. The awareness squeezes at you, compressing you from within. There is something you need to do, and you need to do it now. Something that you're responsible for.
But...what is it? Why do you feel a vague urgency to leave this place? If you could leave, would it help you to remember?
You suspect that it might. But you can't see any way out. No arches or doors. Not even a window. It could perhaps just be the sheer number of people blocking your view. They mill about, and they wander, their proximity hardly giving you room to maneuver. No one ever keeps still; they're all in constant motion. Mingling and mixing, dancing and meandering through what seems an impossibly small area.
You're almost dizzy, with all the movement.
This is wrong. Somehow, it's wrong. These strange people, with their masks and their finery, their too-loud laughter and gaiety. It all seems like a contrivance, a deliberate distraction. An illusion, created in order to disorient you.
Why? Why are they keeping you here--if that's even what they're doing? If they're not keeping you here, then why the urge to escape? What is so important to you, that you feel the need to be elsewhere?
And why can't you remember? You want so much to be frustrated, but you're too confused. Too mystified. And ever so slightly afraid.
Then he is there. A commanding presence, striking and powerful. Almost hypnotically handsome in glittering cobalt. Your breath catches; your heart almost stops, in response to a fresh wave of fear. This man is a danger to you. An obstacle. The tiniest hint of a warning sounds deep in the darkest recesses of your mind:
Get away from him. Get out of this place; don't let him near you!
But you stand transfixed as he comes closer. An arm wraps around your waist, and you're irresistibly drawn with him into the dance. You can't quite look away from his face, from his beautiful mismatched eyes.
You're not sure that you want to.
But you do look away. That moment breaks the spell. For your eyes, by an odd chance, fall on the face of a clock that's been hidden away. It jolts you, gives you a burst of adrenaline.
Time is running out. Every second that ticks away is a second that you can't afford to lose. You still can't remember why you feel this way, but urgency is taking hold.
You break out of his arms, away from the beautiful distraction you somehow know he's created. The crowd seems thicker now, but you push through, regardless.
This is a trap--you realize that now. But you can't let it stop you. Can't let your disorientation stand in the way.
You're getting out of this place. Even if you have to smash your way free.
