[#001] NEW BEGINNINGS (TORCHWOOD)
Theme Prompt: #001 – Second Chances
Title: New Beginnings
Fandom: Torchwood
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 1,000 words
Summary: Toshiko thought her life was over. Then along came a man who would change everything.
Toshiko cowered at the sight of the two burly UNIT officers, stood there in their intimidating black combat gear and red berets, brandishing heavy guns. Their choice of weaponry seemed overkill in a place where the prisoners were chained and cuffed, malnourished, filthy and devoid of any will to carry on. If they'd stood there with no weapon at all, she didn't think she'd have the mental strength to challenge them.
After so many months of isolation, and nothing more than that patronizing tannoy to bark orders at her -sit, stand, present yourself for inspection- she'd thought seeing another human being, any human being, would be a blessed relief. Instead she felt exposed. Her cell, cramped and spartan as it had been, had become something of a sanctuary from the outside world.
The man who'd come to see her, the handsome one in the long grey coat, had promised that he could get her out of here, on the proviso that she come work for him. Five years and he could wipe the slate clean. It was unique and it was dangerous, so he warned her. She didn't care. She'd give him fifty years if it would get her out of here. Nothing could be worse than this.
She took a tentative step forward. The guards held firm in front of the heavy metal door, barring her way. A moment of panic fluttered deep within her stomach. They weren't going to let her pass. What if the man hadn't been able to get them to agree to his terms? Had he filled her with a false hope of freedom? She couldn't bear the thought. If she didn't get out of here now, she'd rather die. Perhaps if she stormed towards the guards, attempting some kind of escape, they'd be forced to fire upon her. At least death would be quick. That had to count for something.
"Prisoner Sato will remain here," came that awful voice from the tannoy. In those few words, all hope inside her died, like a delicate flower crushed under the heel of one of those heavy boots worn by her captors. A moment later, the door opened, and through it stepped the tall handsome man. Her heart stopped in her chest as those intense blue eyes drank in the sight of her.
'Hey!' Jack barked. 'Get those cuffs off her!'
'But, sir,' the guard insisted, gripping his gun tighter.
Jack came over and stood in front of him, invading his personal space in a confrontational way. 'Was something I said unclear, soldier?' His voice was as cold and clear as his eyes, sending a chill down her spine. 'I said get them off, now. She's in my custody, not my prisoner.'
Reluctantly, the soldier complied, extracting a heavy wad of keys and expertly selecting the ones that released her from her leg chains first, then her handcuffs. Out of habit, Toshiko just stood there, keeping her feet and wrists held close together, as if still bound by a second invisible set of restraints.
'Thank you,' came the reply from Jack, though by his tone alone, Toshiko could tell there wasn't the slightest trace of sincerity in it.
There was a gentle hand on her shoulder, and a second on her arm. 'It's okay,' he said, all traces of his icy demeanor having melted away as he slowly lead her out through the door. He placed a hand on the small of her back. 'You don't have to worry. I'll look after you.'
She flinched at the combination of words and touch. Jack seemed to sense her thoughts and immediately pulled away his hand. 'That wasn't what I meant. You don't have to be afraid. My interest in you is purely professional. I only meant that I'll take care of everything. A place for you to live, money, a car, whatever you need. You're not a prisoner anymore. Sure, there'll be a few rules, but nothing unreasonable. Anything you want, if it's in my power to give you, it's yours.'
'Why?' she stuttered. 'Why me, I mean?'
He stood and gave her an incredulous look. 'You really have to ask? Toshiko, you are a genius. Do you realise how few people there are on the planet that can do what you can do?' He turned and continued walking out of the facility, towards a big black SUV. 'Like I said, I'm building up something. I want the best, and you're it. I don't settle for less.'
Toshiko walked slowly, just slightly behind his imposing stature.
He took one step further forward and stepped across her path, facing her. 'You don't believe me, do you?'
She cast her eyes to the ground, unable to meet his gaze. He gripped her shoulders. 'Stick with me and let me prove to you what I already know.'
As they approached the vehicle Jack stepped around to the driver's side. 'Hop in and make yourself comfy. We've got quite a drive ahead of us.'
'Where are we going?'
'Cardiff. Hope you don't mind the cold. Sunny days are rare, and I'm not yet certain they're not rift-related.'
She stepped up to the passenger door, spotting the yellow lettering on the roof of the vehicle and running her fingers across the word. 'What’s Torchwood?'
He gave her a curious look. 'You worked for Ministry of Defence and you’ve never heard of Torchwood?' He gave an amused little chuckle. 'And here I was thinking our reputation preceded us.'
'Sorry,' she apologised. 'I was just a no one.'
He grinned at her. 'Well, from now on you're about to be a someone, Toshiko Sato.'
'Don't think I deserve to be someone,' she replied despondently.
Jack rested an elbow on the roof and cocked his head at her. 'Someone once gave me a second chance and it turned out okay. Figured I should pay it forward. You just never know. You might surprise yourself. Besides, you're cute and that prison jumpsuit look definitely doesn't suit you.'
