[#005] Taking Risks (House MD)
Theme Prompt: #005 - Long Shot
Title: Taking Risks
Fandom: House MD
Rating/Warnings: PG-13, a bit of language and referenced homophobia
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 514 words
Summary: Wilson isn't used to going for long shots, but he'll make an exception in regards to his feelings for a certain diagnostician.
It’s a part of House’s routine to go for the longest shots in terms of what his patients have. When there’s no other option, when it’s either an extremely rare disease or a mystery, he will always choose the former— he likes concrete answers, not mysteries. Going for the unlikely option, a million to one possibility, that’s just part of his life.
Wilson can’t say the same about his routine; it’s never a mystery with what his patient has— some kind of cancer. It’s never something new, it’s sort of in his job description. So he’d much rather go for the one in the million to one possibility. But it’s not like he can’t do much about it right now— not like it’s worth hiding anymore. It’s most likely obvious, isn’t it? And House isn’t oblivious to anything around him. He knows, and he’s waiting for him to spell it out.
It’s a long shot that it’ll work out like he sure hopes it’ll work out. But still, he decides to play against the chances, against the odds. He needs to let it out of his chest. If it doesn’t work, he can go and find other friends. He doesn’t think House will have that much luck, anyway.
After work, he ends up at House’s place, like usual, and he stares at him and tries to figure out what the hell he’s supposed to say. How is he supposed to say it? Million to one, he’s going for the one, he’s going to take this weight off his chest even if House doesn’t like it.
He draws in a breath.
“House?”
He doesn’t take his eyes off the TV. They’re watching Real Housewives of New Jersey. But he still gives him a nod, urging him to continue.
“I should have told you a long time ago,” he starts. “But…”
Wilson’s hesitance draws House’s interest, apparently, because his best friend and soon to be ex-best friend turns to him.
“I’m bisexual,” he says. He sucks in air. “And I’m in love with you.”
He expects a million things, all part of the million possibilities against the one he wants— he expects House to raise a brow, say something stupid. He expects House to say ‘yeah, I know’ without much care, he expects House to roll his eyes and say ‘oh finally’.
He doesn’t expect House’s eyes to widen, his striking blue gaze staring at his soul. His mouth is slightly agape and House is surprised at his confession— House hasn’t formulated a reply yet. What’s going on? What the fuck is going on?
“House?” he tries. Still, no answer— House.exe has stopped working. “Did you… not know?”
He finally manages to say, “I didn’t.”
“And…” he trails off, grabbing his jacket preemptively.
House.exe has been restarted, apparently, because he says casually, “And we’re both idiots. Can I kiss you?”
“Oh,” Wilson breathes, and all the warmth that left his body comes flooding back.
He pulls House into a kiss and decides he should play the game of risk and few chances more often.
