[006] Doesn't Feel Right (Original)

Theme Prompt: Unexpected company
Title: Doesn't Feel Right
Fandom: Original
Rating/Warnings: None
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 533
Summary: Everything's going too well. Something's not right...

“I think there’s something strange going on.”
“How do you mean?”
“Well, everything’s shifted slightly. I’m wandering around thinking I don’t quite fit.”
“Fit where?”
“Here. This reality. It’s as if I’ve been transported into a different dimension where things are a bit different, but not enough that it’s obvious.”
“Okay… What kinds of things?”
“Well, my glucose levels, for a start. Ever since New Year, they’ve been amazing.”
“Isn’t that because you’re working really hard to make them that way?”
“Not really! I’ve changed a couple of things, yes, but it’s been easy and the effect is astronomical.”
“Isn’t that a good thing?”
“Of course! Don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy, but it’s just weird. I’ve struggled with my diabetes every day for ten years and suddenly it’s just easy.”
“Anything else?”
“A publisher wants my novel.”
“Is that so weird? You’ve worked really hard on that and you’ve been selling short stories for a couple of years.”
“Maybe, but it’s not that good. And it’s my first one. What are the odds that the first time I really try to get it published, I’m successful? That never happens.”
“But you know you’re a good writer.”
“I do. And thanks.”
“So - eating habits and writing success. What else?”
“My new boss is making everything a lot easier at work. And ever since my husband got back from his trip, he’s been a lot more affectionate. I feel like we’re communicating better than ever.”
“So all good things?”
“Yes, all amazing things. As I said, I’m not complaining. I’m just a bit freaked out. And I’m waiting for someone to tap me on the shoulder, tell me I don’t belong here and whisk me back to my reality.”
“Were you there when it happened?”
“What do you mean? When what happened?”
“When you got transported here in the first place. I mean, were you aware of it happening, in the exact moment?”
“No, it’s just a feeling that’s been creeping up on me all year.”
“So, despite the fact that the global situation is deteriorating fast, 2019 is so far proving to be pretty awesome for you personally?”
“I guess.”
“And you’re feeling guilty that you’ve having a good time, when everything around you is falling apart?”
“Yeah, I think that’s got a lot to do with it. I mean, several of my friends are having a terrible time so far this year. And the political situation is less than ideal all over.”
“Can’t you just be glad that things are going well?”
“Absolutely! And I am. I just feel sorry for the other me.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I’m benefitting from all her hard work and effort to make her life great, and she’s stuck in my old reality where everything was rubbish. Doesn’t seem fair, really.”
“Maybe she can fix everything there, like she did here. That way, if and when you get sent back, it’ll all be great there too.”
“That’s a nice thought! In the meantime, I think I’m going to enjoy being an unexpected guest in this reality, and do whatever I can to make sure I don’t screw it up.”
“Good plan! And good luck!”

So out of the box and unexpected! I didn't think an all dialogue piece would work, but it does.
I'd like to think maybe there's a me somewhere else having a better go of things, too. I hope she is having an awesome time, in fact! :)

This is brilliant! She's probably not in a different dimension, but sometimes when everything is going well it's hard to accept. You keep waiting for it all to fall apart or to turn out to be a dream.

Definitely unexpected, but well done! The back and forth dialogue sets almost a sort of rush, the feeling that the other shoe is likely to drop any minute.

Oooh, I like the dialogue-only approach you used.
